Even if you think girls shouldn’t wear overly-sexualized costumes this Halloween, aren’t you tired of people complaining about it? Every year someone tweets something like, “Your underwear isn’t a costume, ladies,” and gets 100 favorites. What is original about that? Nothing. It’s totally expected and no longer funny at this point.
So how do we get them to shut up? I’ve outlined a few possibilities below:   Â
“America.”
This is America, for goodness’ sake. We are allowed to wear anything we want (as long as we wear something). Do we really want to go back to a time where you could be flogged in the streets for wearing something incorrectly? Let freedom ring with bare skin.
“Are you jealous?”
No matter who a nasty comment is directed to, this is always a good response. Â
“Thank you.”/”I thought they looked great.”
If Catholic school taught me anything useful (besides how to use my school uniform as a costume), it’s to kill them with kindness. These responses are great for shutting down someone who’s trying to kill you or your friend’s Halloween vibe.
“Have you never seen a thigh before? “
If you haven’t, step one: look down while taking a shower.
Bottom line: sl*t shaming comments are boring and tired-out. Since costumes and our freedom to wear them show no signs of changing, there’s no point in making bad jokes about underwear. Use these comments to shut down anyone who hasn’t gotten the memo!
