A Personal Guide to Brunch at The Porch

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

A food trend that has been up and coming in 2015 is that of “brunch.” A common meal that (usually) places breakfast and lunch together, you can enjoy the option of ordering anything from an omelet to a cheeseburger. Plus, restaurants that feature brunch usually offer accompanying alcoholic beverages. If you’re really lucky, these drinks, such as mimosas and bloody marys, are served bottomless. One of my favorite places to brunch in the ‘burgh is merely half a block away from my dorm and serves amazing food all while giving me a front seat view of Cathy. That’s right, The Porch – located right across from the lovely Hillman library – serves up brunch like it’s their job. Here I’ll be outlining my favorite picks and making you want to eat everything right through your computer screen.

Eggs Benedict

It’s hard not to enjoy such a classic. However, mastering the “eggs benedict” is harder than one might think. Welcome to 2015, where a new wave of benedicts are coming through. From fried eggplant benedicts to avocado and waffle ones, the options are endless. However, The Porch masters the benedict, in my opinion. I asked for mine with bacon instead of ham and that was one of the best decisions I made all day. Even though I asked for the creamy sauce on the side, that didn’t stop me from drowning the whole plate in it. Served with crispy potatoes, this meal tasted just as good as it looked (it was even featured on a major Instagram page, food_ilysm!).

____ and Sweet Potato Hash

I put the space there because this is a dish that is constantly changing. When I ordered it, it was chorizo and sweet potato hash. However, lately, it’s a fried chicken and sweet potato hash. Served with two sunny-side-up eggs and toast, this dish was out of this world. I was left satisfied and amazed that I hadn’t tried sweet potato hash before. If you’re a fan of eggs and sweet potatoes, this dish is for you.

Cinnamon Rolls

Let me just tell you, I am mad at myself for not trying these earlier. Light and flaky, these cinnamon rolls are perfectly baked and are covered in the ideal amount of icing. I was honestly upset that I had to share and secretly wanted to order a whole skillet of them to go. If you are a cinnamon roll queen, then these cinnamon rolls, always featured on the special menu when you walk in, are a must.

Pizza is Never Off-Limits

Whoever said you can’t eat pizza for breakfast has clearly never been to The Porch. The brunch menu features all the Porch’s delicious pizzas, such as the classic margherita, the bacon and egg pizza, and the bianca pizza. I ordered the bianca with my dad, and the fig jam and arugula combination will forever have my heart. If you’re looking for a new pizza to try, definitely order the bianca and share it with a friend (or not).

I hope this has encouraged you all to brunch more often (yes, “brunch” is a verb). Since food is my boyfriend, I am constantly looking for new foods to eat and restaurants to try around Pittsburgh. To see where I’ve been, check out my new food Instagram, @hungrygrl_bigcity!
