A Single Girl’s Style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

Living in a day and age of catchy love songs and rom-com releases by the dozens, college girls in all corners of the country are looking for that one over-the-top, only-happens-in-Nicholas-Sparks-books type of love. Even us collegiate ladies who don’t rank finding love (right now) at the top of our checklist wouldn’t mind a little attention from some cute guys on campus. So, how can you go about catching the eye of a hot guy on campus? While I am a firm believer in never forcing anything (manipulating never works out), there are a few tricks you should know about your accessories. Each can convey that you are, in fact, a single gal. Knowing the dos and don’ts of single girl fashion and owning a few quintessential pieces (while getting rid of the others) will make you more approachable and let guys know that you’re single.

Wearing a cute head scarf saves you time and makes you look super fashionable. A little pop of color on your lips and a nice watch draws attention to your feminine features!

The Don’ts

Ditch the Diamonds

Wearing diamond anything is a universal symbol of “I’m in love.” I’m not saying you should forget about a beautiful family heirloom or discard your grandma’s diamond earrings – but wearing a big rock on your finger obviously reads “I’m taken.” You might think that just because it’s not on your ring finger or on your left hand that you can get away with appearing single…but you can’t.

Heart Shaped Necklaces Got to Go

Not only do I think that the overly girly heart-shaped chained necklace is cliché and seventh grade, but it also gives the impression that you’re committed elsewhere. To be honest, it looks like you’re in a relationship with a guy who a) Totally lacks creativity when it comes to gifts, and b) Had his mom drive him to a sh*tty mall to check out Piercing Pagoda. It also says that you’re letting someone be physically close to your heart!

Lose (some) Bracelets

Thin, elegant bracelets are another typical (but much better than the damn necklace) gift from a guy you’re seeing. Although I think charm bracelets are adorable and meaningful, they typically represent places you’ve gone and memories you’ve shared with a guy. Wearing one doesn’t make you seem single or open to new romance!

The Dos

Big Hoops are a Big YES

I know some people think that hooped earrings are out of style, but I think they’re the sexiest accessory a girl can wear. They draw attention to your face, and are fun and flirtatious. I ALWAYS notice when a girl is wearing stylish hoops and guys do too. I actually had a guy come up to me at a party with the opening line, “I like your hoops.” They’re sassy and should be worn with confidence. They have no affiliation to boyfriends, love or taken-ness. Do the hoops.

Headscarves: A win-win

In no way do these convey that you’re in a relationship. All they say is you’re frickin’ cute and that you want people to look your way. You can find intricate patterns and crazy colors that will go great with 95% of your wardrobe, making them a smart buy. Headscarves are just one of those pieces that make you look like you put a lot of effort into your outfit, when really you were just covering up a bad hair day. Guys will look your way, and you’ll be a little fashionista!

And the #1 thing you can wear…

So corny, but I just don’t care…it’s a smile! People are drawn to happiness. If you’re frowning or angrily texting on your phone it’s a huge sign (unfortunately for most college gals) that you’re in an unhappy relationship or just an unhappy person. No one is going to talk to a girl with a scowl on her face. Work on making your face look relaxed, but also pleased and content. I’ve been told that I have a b*tch face sometimes and I don’t even realize it! (Yeah, still working on that). So smile, smile, smile!

Tweaking these little things can make you stand out in a positive way. Once you lose the love-linked items, get ready for some newfound attention!
