Now that the temperature is rising ever so slowly, it’s time to push those American Apparel cable-knit sweaters to the back of your closet, and replace them with your never-ending supply of cut-offs. Halleluiah! It felt as if winter was never going to end and we were going to spend the rest of our lives in a polar vortex. Now that it is fully acceptable to drink iced coffee and spend your entire day sitting in Schenley, you need an updated closet that matches this newly sun-lit Pittsburgh weather. If you’re anything like me, you’re the type of person that spends an hour standing in front of her closet trying to decide what to wear the next day, but completely changes their mind the next morning. However, with these staple pieces in your closet, your summer wardrobe is sure to be as hot as the lifeguard at your local beach!
No matter what, shorts are a must. High-waisted shorts are an item that seems as if they will never go out of style. They can be worn with just about everything and can usually work with a casual outfit, as well as something more dressed up. Whether you pick up a pair at Urban or hit up Goodwill and make your own, high-waisted shorts are a must this summer. They come in all washes and colors, such as acid wash and black. You’re guaranteed to find the perfect pair! Try these high-waisted shorts from Urban Outfitters ($49).
Though not everyone is like this, I am the type of person who likes to throw on a dress and go. Now don’t freak out at the word dress- dresses can be casual! My favorite dress is one that I wear almost every day in the summer because it is cotton, comfortable, and it goes with everything! If you’re also a dress person or want to add one to your closet, look for one that is lightweight, not body-tight, and one of decent length. One of my all-time favorites is this dress from Aritzia ($40). Though this dress is grey, it is made of a breathable fabric, so you won’t have to worry about sweat stains.
Even though it is hot during the day, you’re going to want something to cover you up at night (especially at the beach, there’s always that ocean breeze that makes you shiver). Try a lightweight cardigan to cover up when you start to feel chilly. A perfect one would be this over-sized cardigan from American Apparel ($82). It’s one of my favorites, especially when paired with high-waisted shorts. That way, you won’t have to worry about being frozen while you enjoy your froyo!
Everyone needs at least one graphic tee that they can throw on over a bathing suit or with their high-waisted shorts. I like my t-shirts to be lightweight and a little oversized. This way, I won’t have to worry about sweat stains or clinginess. Plus, if they’re slightly oversized, they look good tucked into shorts or skirts. One of my favorite graphic tees is this New York tee from Nasty Gal ($33.60). It’s comfortable, lightweight, and looks super awesome with all of my shorts and skirts! Plus, it’s super edgy, especially when paired with my motorcycle boots.
Lastly, you’re going to need something to hold all of your crazy beach hair back. I like to find colorful and thick headbands for when I go to the beach, pool, or even just out and about. Good headbands can be found literally everywhere, and don’t have to be expensive! One of my favorite places to find headbands is at Forever 21. This headwrap from F21 is super cute and only $3.80! I think I can call this a wrap now.
