Ten Things To Do Instead of Being Homesick

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

When I completed my first week of college, I was ecstatic. Not only did I survive a whole week of sharing a bathroom, but I also managed to avoid the common homesick feeling. I became involved in clubs on campus and busy with my classes. I also started to go to the gym regularly. (What’s the freshman fifteen anyway?) Fast forward to now, about three months into my first semester, and shockingly I am met with overwhelming feelings of homesickness; this caught me off guard and I didn’t know what to do. All I wanted was to be home in my bed and have my mom cook me all of my favorite meals. However, I realized that this was not an option and decided I needed to get myself together. I started to become even busier and found a few ways to keep my mind off how much I missed home. Try a few (or all) of these ideas to snap out of that homesick feeling!

10. Take A Walk

There is nothing like a long walk to clear your head. Especially with the nice fall/winter weather we’ve been having, you’re sure to get an artsy and scenic picture to Instagram in the process.

9. Talk to Your RA

This is one of the many reasons you have an RA. They have been though most of the problems you are experiencing, so who better to talk to?

8. Clean Your Room

I’m not sure if this is just one of my weird habits, but it seriously works. Whenever I’m feeling down, I calm myself down by cleaning my side of the room. I also organize my closet and end up trying everything I own on. Plus, this is a good way to plan future outfits!

7. Make a Bucket List

Making lists is a great way to get your mind off of your current problems. So why not make a bucket list? This is also a great way to think of goals that you have for yourself to remind you of why you’re here in the first place. It will help you stay motivated and make you work ten times harder than you already are.

6. Watch a Movie… or Five

Nothing cheers me up more than movie nights, whether it’s by myself or with friends. When in doubt, watch Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

5. Ben and Jerry Will Always Be Here for You

Basically the only men I trust. Nothing soothes those bad feelings quite like me, myself, and a pint of Coffee and Heath Bar Crunch ice cream.

4. Work it Out

I seem to have my best workouts when I go to the gym not feeling my best. My negative thoughts push me to work harder and improve my mood. Plus, I feel so much better about myself in the process.

3. Read, Read, Read

Whether it’s a magazine or a book, reading is always a great way to escape from reality as well as everything else that you should be doing.

2. Listen to Music

Nothing calms me down quite like blasting Lana Del Rey and singing (a.k.a screaming) along. Whether it’s Lana or Katy Perry, you’re sure to sing your blues away.

1. Never Stop Smiling

It’s proven that if you continue to smile, it will actually boost your mood. Also, it takes so many more muscles to frown than it does to smile, and we all know that we’re way too lazy to do anything that requires extra work.

Hi! I'm Jessie and I am currently dual majoring in communication and non-fiction writing at The University of Pittsburgh. I am also the Senior Editor for Pitt's Her Campus! I emulate everything Carrie Bradshaw and can watch Breakfast At Tiffany's everyday for the rest of my life. You can usually find me blasting country music a little too loud while wearing a floppy hat.
