While Spooky Season is coming to an end as the month of November is upon us, there are still ways to remain in the Halloween mood! Forget about all of the candy, costumes and all those redundant over-watched Halloween movies! You may be experiencing some Halloween blues this year, so here’s an alternative solution for some spooky fun. Whether you are a true crime junkie or a horror fanatic, BuzzFeed Unsolved is the series for you. The show is a YouTube series (now made available through Amazon Prime Video), where the viewers embark on true crime events to supernatural phenomenons to haunted buildings with the two polarizing hosts: Shane Madej and Ryan Bergara. BuzzFeed Unsolved is split into different categories: Buzzfeed Unsolved: True Crime and Buzzfeed Unsolved: Supernatural. The True Crime series takes a new unsolved true crime case weekly, uncovers the facts behind the case, and ventures down the different theories that could be accounted for. On the other hand, the Supernatural series takes viewers down a completely different path. This series delves into the realm of the supernatural focusing on unexplained phenomena ranging from the haunting of ghosts and demons to urban myths and legends to encounters with aliens. Here are my top picks out of the series that will keep you in the spooky mood for the rest of the year!Â
- “The Ghost and Demons of Bobby Mackey’s” – Supernatural Season 2, Episode 1
-
“Hey there demons, it’s me ya boy!” Kicking off the list is my absolute favorite episode from the BuzzFeed Unsolved series. When it comes to the two hosts, Shane is the true skeptic and Ryan is the full-blown believer. Ryan fully believes in the supernatural, and all that lies beneath it. From aliens to BigFoot to ghosts and demons, Ryan has faith in it all. Shane, on the other hand, not so much. Shane is the inquisitive friend who simply believes nothing of the supernatural and that everything can be explained. Without the fear of supposed ghosts and demons, Shane plays the role of the agitator and ultimately just makes the episode even more unique. Both Shane and Ryan show how true and authentic the footage is that is being provided. Trust me, BuzzFeed Unsolved: Supernatural is nothing like any other ghost tv-show; there’s no fake evidence or made-up ghosts or demons. With the spookiness that is brought by Bobby Mackey’s and hilarity brought by Shane and Ryan, this episode is by far the best, and has provided many memorable scenes and unforgettable quotes.

- “The Bizarre Collar Bomb Bank Robbery” – True Crime Season 4, Episode 2
-
How could a pizza delivery driver start his day off at work and end up dead before nightfall? You’ll find out in this episode! If you’re anything like me and love yourself an unsolved crime, this episode is for you. Learn about how Brian Wells went from delivering a pizza, to ending up on TV detained by the police for robbing a bank and then ultimately being blown apart by a bomb wrapped around his neck. While the Collar Bomb Bank Robbery is a little bizarre and rather deranged, Ryan and Shane’s back-and-forth comments and hilarious commentary will help get you through it. From the beginning to the end, the episode will have you on the edge of your seat waiting to learn more about the complex case. In less than 30 minutes, Ryan and Shane cover the victims, the suspects and all the theories. While some aspects of the case remain unsolved, thanks to Ryan and Shane’s commentary and their non-stop conversation, you will definitely want to rewatch the episode again and again. Even though this case is considered to be solved, regarding the fact that all of the suspects have been detained and are now sitting in prison or dead, there still remains a missing element: was Brian Wells a victim or an ally? You can make your predictions after watching the episode, but you don’t want to miss out on this one!
- “The Demonic Goatman’s Bridge” – Supernatural Season 3, Episode 4Â
-
Demons, ghosts and ghouls, oh my! Now if you are more into the supernatural realm, the Goatman episode is definitely for you. Watch as Ryan faces his biggest fear as he tries to locate the demonic Goatman! Goatman is the demon owner of the Old Alton Bridge located in the town of Denton, Texas. Embark on Ryan’s first and only demonic force of the season and learn about the demonic presence that pervades the Goatman’s Bridge. This episode displays the unique dynamic between Ryan and Shane. The viewer sees how Ryan tends to be on the nerve-wracking side, and jumps at every little whisper or blow of the wind, while Shane is the complete opposite. In this episode, you can find Shane cursing at the Goatman and threatening to take control of his supposed bridge. Even with the spookiness and creepiness that is contained throughout the episode, the back-and-forth banter between the two takes a little bit of the shivers and jitters away! If you’re looking for a good scare with some jokes in between, this episode should be on your YouTube watchlist.Â
- “The Haunted Halls of Waverly Hills Hospital” – Supernatural Season 2, Episode 4Â
-
“Hi, I’m Little Timmy, want to be my friend?” This episode is another one of my favorites coming from the Supernatural category of the series. If you like evidence of the supernatural, this episode is full of it. The haunted backstory of the Waverly Hills Hospital and the ghostly apparitions that roam the halls of the abandoned building will definitely give you the spooks. Watch as the Ghoul Boys travel to Louisville, Kentucky to discover the ghosts that lie behind the walls of the Waverly Hills Hospital. Being that the facility was once a sanatorium and contained thousands of patients that died from deadly diseases, the hospital deems to be a great place for a ghost investigation. Watch as Shane and Ryan play with Little Timmy, a ghost boy, and then travel down the dank and endless body chute of the hospital only to ask the question, “are ghosts real?” Will they answer this question? You’ll just have to watch to see!Â
- “The Murders That Haunt The Lizzie Borden House” – Supernatural Season 2, Episode 6
-
“Lizzie Borden took an axe, and gave her mother 40 whacks. When she saw what she had done, she gave her father 41”. You’ve probably heard the stories regarding this well-known case. In this episode, Ryan and Shane tackle the unsolved mystery and the supernatural presence surrounding the Lizzie Borden House. Maybe you’ve heard the tale or heard the tiny jingle, but the Lizzie Borden house is not to be messed with. Watch as the notorious “Ghoul Boys” go on another quest to answer the infamous question “are ghosts real?” This quest features the Lizzie Borden House that lies in Fallen River, Massachusetts. Lizzie Borden was suspected of killing her step-mother and father by the use of their household axe. In this episode, the viewers get a taste of supernatural and true crime at the same time. Does the ghost of Lizzie Borden inhabit the walls of her former home? Was she the one who truly did kill her father and step-mother? Find out and see…
- “The Disturbing Murders At Keddie Cabin”- True Crime Season 3, Episode 9Â
-
How could a camping trip go so eerily wrong? A family ventures to Keddie Cabin located in Keddie, California, and four of the family members end up dead. If you’re into gruesome murder mysteries, this episode was made for you! The episode featuring the Keddie Cabin Murders is not only hair-raising but blood-curdling too. Detailing one of the most disturbing and haunting cases I have ever heard, this episode definitely takes the cake in being the scariest. From beginning to the end of the episode, you will be on the edge of your seat, stomach-churning as your fingers begin to tremble in how the case will end. After watching this episode, you’ll also want to make sure you double-check your locks that night. Trust me, you won’t be sleeping after this one!
Whether you become a Boogara, a Shaniac or even a combination of the two, these episodes will be sure to keep you in the spooky mood, even after the month of October ends. There are now seven seasons in counting for the True Crime side of the show and six Supernatural seasons and more on the way. As the Fall semester comes drawing to an end and the month of October comes to a close, BuzzFeed Unsolved will be sure to give you chills, history lessons and few unsolved mysteries throughout your break. Hopefully, you’ll enjoy the episodes just like I did and maybe make your own list of favorites. However, the case revolving around you watching the series will remain unsolved.Â
