We’ve all seen those infomercials where Alisa Milano talks to Chaz Dean about how amazing her hair is now that she uses Wen, but she’s paid to say that. What I write here is completely unbiased and uninfluenced by anything. I’m going to try the Wen system for myself to determine if it really works!

First thing’s first, I ordered the Wen Hair Care Basic Kit in Sweet Almond Mint for $29.95, waited impatiently for it to come in the mail, and took pictures to document my adventure. It’s only fair to say that normally, I use a rather cheap and common brand of shampoo and conditioner; but I want to grow my hair at least half a foot and I thought a new regimen might be necessary to achieve this. Also, my hair is pretty nice in general: no breakage, damage, or dryness.

Because I wanted this to be a legitimate test of Wen, I followed the instructions exactly:

Step 1: Rinse hair thoroughly. Apply WEN® into your palms and rub together. Use 10-16 pumps for short hair, 16-24 for medium length hair and 24-32 pumps for long hair. If your hair is longer or thicker you may need to increase the amount of pumps.

Step 2: Apply to scalp and hair, adding a splash of water to evenly distribute. WEN® has no harsh detergents or sodium lauryl sulfate, so it won’t lather. Massage thoroughly into hair and leave on for the remainder of your shower.

Step 3: Rinse thoroughly and completely, massaging scalp and running fingers through to the ends.

The bottle isn’t that big, so 24 pumps per wash seemed like a lot to me; and I worried that I would go through the bottle super quickly. Considering the amount I paid, I hoped not. The first time I used it, I was worried that because there wasn’t a shampoo component (which usually contains ingredients that reduce oil) my hair would feel heavy and oily. However, it felt and looked the same. A tip: the instructions say to add a splash of water to evenly distribute the product, but really you should soak your hair under the water and apply the cleansing conditioner immediately. If too much water drips off, the conditioner won’t spread two inches down your hair. Another note: This stuff smells amazing.

Day two: I washed my hair the same way as day one, but this time it felt very heavy- even oily. I work out every day so this made me fear that there would be build up. I didn’t like how my hair felt this day and began to doubt whether or not Wen would work for me.

Day three: At the end of the second day my hair felt so gross that I couldn’t continue with the same regimen. On day three I used my regular shampoo and the feeling on my scalp was so amazing! I removed all of the gunk and then used Wen as a conditioner. My scalp felt good and the shaft of my hair was soft and shiny. I liked this method much more; and also tried to use the Wen on its own every other day and using my regular shampoo on the alternate days.

Day four: I used my regular shampoo and conditioner and it didn’t feel any different from before I started using Wen.

Day five: Today I used just Wen, following the instructions exactly. It felt good, soft, and shiny. For the rest of the week I used Wen every other day, or if I thought my hair was feeling dry.

Overall, I like Wen. I do think my hair is shinier and softer, and it definitely appears that my fly-aways aren’t as bad. All in all I think Wen is a good product especially if you have dry, damaged, or colored hair; but I couldn’t use it every day. It’s been four weeks since I started using Wen, and I get compliments all the time on how nice my hair looks. I’m notorious for dyeing my hair and at least once a week a friend of mine will ask me if I’ve dyed it again. On my scout’s honor, I haven’t dyed it, but I think Wen has made my hair so much healthier that it looks darker. Dead ends and split ends make the bottom of your hair look lighter; but Wen has reduced the breakage and my hair looks brand new! I have to say that I definitely recommend Wen. I may not use it exactly like you’re supposed to, but it works and that’s what matters.
