5 Ways to Manage School and Work Successfully

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Point Park chapter.

College may be class during the week and partying on the weekends for some, but for others working at a part time job (or jobs!) on the weeknights and weekends is more the norm. We all want that extra spend cash, but juggling a job or an internship and a full course load can easily get overwhelming. We feel your pain, and because of that here are some tips on how to successfully manage having a job and/or an internship and going to school to:

1. Keep a Planner

When you’re a busy person, you have to keep track of what needs to be done and where you need to be. Not writing things down makes it easy for you to forget what you need to do, and in the end, makes things more difficult than they need to be. Plus, getting in the habit of keeping a planner will come in handy in the professional world. It’s a win-win!

2. Learn to Say “No”

For most of us college part-time workers, we enjoy having extra cash to spend on new clothes or a cool new decoration for the apartment. That extra money makes it hard to pass up picking extra shifts at your job. If you have a paper due the next day that need to be proofread, or a test you really should get some extra studying in for and your boss asks you to come in on a weeknight to cover a shift, don’t be afraid to say “no”. You boss probably knows that you’re in college and have a lot on your plate, they’re not going to be mad at you for prioritizing school!

3. Have a “me” day

For college students that work and go to school, you never really have a day off until the summer or winter breaks. Don’t be afraid to request a weekend off once or twice a semester to just relax and catch up on schoolwork or sleep. Your job wont burn to the ground without you there!

4. Try to work ahead in your classes

Being a procrastinator is a working college students worst nightmare. Saving everything for the day before it’s due and working late the night before it’s fun. It causes way more stress and anxiety than needed. Try to get a jump start on everything that you do!

5. Still enjoy being in college

One of the biggest mistakes students that work and go to school do is not enjoy college while they are there. Big party or event being thrown by the school or by a friend? Request the day off and enjoy the experience! College is still the best years of your life! Embrace it!
