7 Things To Talk About Instead of The Election

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Point Park chapter.

In the heat of the most recent presidential election, I’ve been seeing friendships get ripped apart because of the result. Whether you’re for Hillary or Donald, here are some positive topics of discussion so we can all be friends.

1. Obama’s Friendship with Joe Biden

Still craving political discussion, but hate the negativity of this election? Try talking about the beautiful bromance that is Jobama. It doesn’t matter whether you liked his policies or not, these two loved each other so much that they made friendship bracelets. That’s an important thing that needs discussed.

2. Finals

I know, I know, this seems so mundane, but maybe your friends are having some trouble and they need help or maybe they just want to blow off some steam before the big day. You never know unless you ask. This is much more productive than yelling at each other over current events.

3. Cute Animals

Nothing makes my friends and I happier than looking at cute animals and talking about how happy we hope they are. If you’re over the whole kittens and puppies thing, I suggest googling the African Pygmy Hedgehog, the Harp Seal, or Sea Otters.

4. Movies

Do you know your friends’ favorite movies? Have you seen them? Are there any new movies that you all want to see? Find out! This is a good distraction from all of the hate that it going on in the world.

5. Family

Ask your friends how their families are doing. Moms, dads, siblings, grandparents, pets, anyone! Exchange funny childhood memories. This is a good way to find out more about your friends and have a fuzzy heart from all of the nostalgia.

6. Celebrity Gossip

If you say you don’t care, you’re lying to yourself. Quality entertainment exudes from popular culture. There’s no better way to feel better about your life than to follow reality television.

7. Love

This is a hard time for everyone in America, but the best way to ensure that we will get through it and stay strong is by thinking of all of the good things that are happening in your life right now. If you’re struggling to find something big, think of the little things. You’re alive, you’re healthy, you have people around you that care for you. It may seem like the world is ending right now, but we always find a way past the negativity, and this should not be any different.
