It’s three AM, your pupils are dilated to the max from being in the dark, as you’ve decided to watch one more episode of your latest show obsession on Netflix. On top of the fact that if you go to bed right now you may be able to get three hours of sleep if you’re lucky, nothing has been accomplished for the final you’re going to be taking in less than 8 hours.

The days of studying until 3 a.m. are almost obsolete. The average college student would much rather stay up to see what Walter White and Jesse Pinkman are “cooking” up now, or “keeping up” with Kim Kardashian and family. It also doesn’t help that online media streaming companies such as Netflix are adding new shows and movies to their libraries almost daily. Here is some advice on how to take it easy with your bestie (Netflix) during these last few days of the semester:

It’s all about self control. The next time you have an important paper to do, test or even midterm or final, try to temporarily shut down your Netflix account…or whatever other form of media you use. Have a friend or family member change your password and don’t allow them to tell you what it is until after whatever you need to get done, is done.

Try to leave your dorm room or apartment when studying or working. Studies prove that people do better on exams when they prepare in an environment that they are unfamiliar in. It also helps to have a study buddy alongside you, that’ll definitely curb your need to binge watch.

Your time away at college are supposed to be the best years of your life. Another downside to binge watching in general is becoming anti-social because you have become so obsessed with finishing an episode of a TV show. It may be an escape for many some people, but it’s also very habit-forming!

I’m not saying to completely do away with television in general, but allow yourself designated times for it. If you MUST binge watch (we feel you), use a Friday or Saturday evening and completely dedicate it to yourself and your Netflix account. That way you’ll have something to look forward to after a week full of studying, and your episodes will be much more enjoyable!
