How To Grow As A Photographer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Point Park chapter.

Do you have a desire to pursue a a career or hobby in photography but do not know where to start? Due to the uproar of popularity in this career, it can be intimidating. You may find yourself comparing your work to others or second guess yourself. It is so easy to maintain a positive mindset. Here are a few simple steps to help your photography dream become a reality.

1. MOOD BOARDS

Mood boards are my savior. Creating your idea is such an easy process when all of your inspiration is right in front of you. The best part? They are easy to make. You can either spend some time cutting articles and photos out of a magazine or printing them out. It is the perfect way to explain your idea to an employer or costumer.

2. Practice with friends

Always practice with friends. They are the ones who know you are still trying out new techniques and ideas. Not only are you producing new photos, but you are teaching yourself to be comfortable behind the camera before you get to the real stuff.

3. Social Media

Always share your photos. It is a good idea to have a separate account on your social pages that are dedicated to your photography. Hashtags are key in this situation. The more hashtags you use, the more chance of a wider audience and potential costumers! Not only does it show your potential, but it also introduces you to a community of photographers that love to collaborate!

4. Never say no (unless necessary)

Never pass up an opportunity. Any type of work is good work. From senior photos to an ad, you have no idea who you will be working with. Who knows, this person might be the next step to your “big break!”

5. It is not about the camera

The way your photographs start is with you, not the camera. It does not matter if your favorite photographer has a different camera brand than you. It all depends on the artists visual approach. Focus more on what you are seeing through the lens and all the detail with it, that is where the magic is.

These are simple steps to remember as you are growing as a photographer. Remember to have fun with your process!
