Marilyn Monroe Visits Pittsburgh

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Point Park chapter.

Pittsburgh had a special visitor on April 7th…none other than Marilyn Monroe!

Seward Johnson’s 26-foot-tall realistic statue of the late actress, called “Forever Marilyn,” had been holding down her iconic blowing white skirt in Palm Springs, California since 2011. Pittsburgh was one of few “pit stops” the statue made on its way to Hamilton, New Jersey, where it will be part of a 42-acre sculpture park containing 150 of Johnson’s pieces opening on May 4th.

Due to heavy rains that day and the fact that it was only making an hour-long appearance, the statue remained in pieces instead of fully put together. However, that didn’t stop Pittsburghers, young and old, from hurrying to PPG Plaza with their rain boots on and umbrellas in hand to catch a glimpse of the statue. One after another, people waited their turn to get their photo taken by the “head piece” of the statue. It was truly a unique experience!
