Tell us about some of your favorite hobbies.

I like to read, do crafty stuff and watch movies. When it comes to reading, I enjoy some Sci-Fi, young adult fiction and LGBTQ literature. For holidays, I like to decorate by cutting things out of construction paper. This year I’m doing pumpkins and bats. Last year for fall, I traced leaves out of brown and yellow paper. For Christmas, I like doing snowflakes. I love comedies and some war movies. Hands down, my favorite movie is Joyeux Noël which is about World War I. It’s a beautiful story about a cease-fire that happened one Christmas. It’s through the eyes of German, French and British soldiers.

Why did you decide to go to school at UP?

It was only between UP and Concordia. When I toured Concordia, I didn’t like the fact that they turned a tennis court into a parking lot. I liked the idea of a small, private institution and financial aid.

What’s your best memory from school?

I’m going to say last year around Thanksgiving, my friends and I had a Friendsgiving. We all made different things and contributed in some fashion.

Can you tell us about how you picked your major?

I’ve changed my major a few times. I originally thought I wanted to do accounting because my dad did that and I’m good at math. Then I took an economics class and I thought, I can’t do that. I thought really hard about it and then I decided to switch to education. Then I doubled majored in education and French. Then I changed to an education minor because I realized I couldn’t commit to student teaching while being a full-time student. Now I’m a French major with an education minor.

What are your best memories from study abroad?

Visiting the antique theater and the amphitheater. The guide we had was really cool. She was a really energetic woman who knew so much about both places. It was really cool to see so much about the history.

What types of clubs are you involved in? What do you enjoy most about these clubs?

I am currently the treasurer for two different clubs. The Round Table is a book discussion group and then I’m also part of the Native American club. The Round Table’s a club I really like because I love talking about books. It’s really cool to see other people’s interests. I love sharing the different interests I have. In the Native American club, I really like the other officers I work with. I love being able to talk about Native American culture and learn more about it and educate people on different Native American issues. Native Americans are considered an invisible minority. The Dakota Access Pipeline was a huge deal. We had an interesting discussion in the club about Dakota Access Pipeline.

Can you tell us one life lesson you learned from Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior year?

My life motto is to take life one day at a time. I have some anxiety issues, so sometimes if I look at a list of things I want to do, I get so overwhelmed. I have to remind myself to just prioritize what I need to do first, and then go on from there. Just stay present in the moment and center myself.

What are your major goals for this year?

My goal is graduating. I’m looking forward to spending as much time as I can with my friends before graduating and taking as many fun classes as I can. It’s my last year, I gotta make it count!

Hello, my name is Madison Hughes! I love creative writing, reading historical fiction, baking, and running! I am from California and I am studying in Portland. This will be my Junior year, and my first year writing for HerCampus. :)
