Valentine’s Day celebrations can extend to include friends and families as well as significant others. Relationships of all kinds should be acknowledged because they’re important fixtures of our lives. You can show your loved ones how much you care about them in little ways every day, not just Valentine’s Day. However, if you want to make a grand gesture, this’s the perfect day to do it. It’s disappointing that Valentine’s Day’s on a weekday this year but don’t let that stop you!Â
You should take advantage of holidays like this to experience joy with your college friends since sadly, we won’t all be around each other forever. Get your homework done early and go have fun with the people you care about. College is about much more than getting good grades (although that’s also very important). If you absolutely can’t avoid doing homework on Valentine’s Day, maybe suggest having a friend study group so that you can at least be all together. Take some chocolate too because that’ll make the time even sweeter!
Â
If you’re looking for fun things to do you could always do some baking. You can also look on Netflix to find a movie or a TV show to watch if you want to stay in or you can go out in Portland all together for dinner. See, Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to always have a romantic element! You can still enjoy the holiday with some of your favorite people.
Â
If you don’t get to see your family on Valentine’s Day, take an opportunity to Skype or call them so you can share how much you miss and love them. They’ll really appreciate it and your heart will be uplifted by their happiness. If you have the chance, you may consider sending them a card or candy as a gift. If not, just taking a moment out of your busy day will speak volumes.
Â
While you’re Skyping with your family, don’t forget to say Happy Valentine’s Day to your pets! I know they can’t understand what you’re saying but I bet they would still appreciate being included in the celebrations!

Overall, Valentine’s Day’s an opportunity to have some fun with those you care about. You shouldn’t let the cultural norm of celebrating the day with a significant other stop you from fully embracing the holiday. Valentine’s Day is about love and love can be expressed in many different ways.
