Spring break has quickly come and gone, and it’s only a short matter of time before we pack up for a hot summer break.  We girls all know what summer means – BIKINI SEASON!  With Victoria Secret, Aerie, and Forever 21 pushing out hot, bikini ad campaigns each week, it’s hard to ignore those lean, toned abs blown up on every billiard in Times Square.  To get your own bikini bod, check out TCRH’s 5K marathon which Her Campus at Princeton is proudly co-sponsoring.  Tropical Clinics for Rural Health: Princeton (TCRHP) is an active student organization that focuses on raising awareness on health issues in rural parts of the world.

Did you know that villagers living in rural Kenya walk between 3 to 10 miles a day for healthcare?  Yet many of these health facilities lack the funds to obtain proper equipment and pharmaceutical drugs, thereby, lacking the ability to provide adequate healthcare to villagers in Kenya.  Your entry fee, via participation, will help TCRH in its mission to improve these health facilities.  To encourage y’all, here are tens reasons to take part in the TCRH 5K!

1. You indulged in way too many “exotic” cocktails as you lounged/partied your way through the balmy beaches of the tropical isles.

2.  Like 99% of us, you most likely late-night snacked your way through midterms as well.  Donuts are much more delicious at 3 am and seriously, who can deny those cheesy pizza breads at Studio ’34?

3.   If you have never participated in a 5K before, why not start now?  If you’re not much of a runner, fast-walking a 5K also provides a sweaty cardio workout!

4.  YOU CAN NEVER HAVE ENOUGH PRINCETON T-SHIRTS (provided upon participation).  Show off your Tiger pride!

5.  The 5K, which is about 3.1 miles, distance is surprisingly easy to train for.  For those of you who want to prepare for this, you can easily start preparing one week beforehand, starting with 2 miles and gradually increasing your distance.  The “quickie” training schedule, which can be done on the treadmill if weather not permitting, would be:

  • Day 1: 2 miles – This should not be too difficult, even if you’re not a runner.
  • Day 2: 3 miles
  • Day 3: 2.5 miles
  • Day 4: 3.5 miles
  • Day 5: 3 miles – If your muscles are sore or too tired, take a break!  Use ice packs and sign up for a soothing massage session at Dillon!
  • Day 6: 4 miles – Although the 5K is less than 4 miles, preparing yourself with extra distance will allow you to run the actual race with much more ease and less chances of injuries.
  • Day 7: 3.1 miles, TCRH 5K marathon day!

6.  Besides meeting new people who are passionate about a great cause, running with a group of people motivates you to keep running!  Before you know it, that 5K will be over and you’ll be wondering if you actually ran 5K.

7.  AND for those of you who are athletes or have the incredible mentality to workout on a daily basis, the 5K is a terrific way of changing up your workout routine.  You’ll work those “hidden” muscle groups and even if you’re a regular runner, the terrain will bring a good sweat on.

8.  So that really cute Lululemon pants and Nike Free Runs you bought in the summer…well, it’s time you’ve dug them out from your closet.  After all, it’s spring and when else are you going to put that $200 outfit to use?

9.  You’re just a philanthropist at heart (and we should all learn to be like you).  After all, not only are you supporting a terrific cause, you’re encouraging others at Princeton, and around the world, to do the same.  Remember “In the nation’s service, and in the service of all nations.”

10.  Not only will you be supporting important health issues in rural parts of the world, you are also encouraging other Princeton students to be part of a healthier, collegiate community through community service.
