PC’s Top Five Winter Trends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Providence chapter.

As we approach Thanksgiving break, many of us are preparing to go home and gather up our winter clothes for the return of New England winter. Summer’s gone, and with it, so is looking cute, right? Wrong! Just because it’s getting cold doesn’t mean we have to choose between being warm and looking good. Check out these top PC trends for keeping warm and looking hot this winter. And ladies, don’t worry if none of these trendy items are in your closet—Christmas is just around the corner!

1. North Face Jackets

The North Face fleece is the jacket of choice when it comes to keeping warm at Providence. The coats come in a variety of colors and styles, making it easy to choose one that fits your signature look. Black tends to be the color of choice for PC girls, since it’s neutral and goes with pretty much everything in your closet, but feel free to break the mold and buy a bright, fun color. Maybe you’ll start a new trend. Another great thing about the North Face fleeces is that unlike most winter coats, they’re pretty tailored jackets, so no more hiding our shapes underneath down puffer coats!

2. Ugg Boots or Leather Boots

When I first realized that Uggs were popular at PC, I questioned the judgment of our PC collegiates. They’re not particularly attractive, and they look hard to walk in. After receiving a pair of Uggs for Christmas last year, I have been converted. Uggs keep my feet warm better than just about any other shoe during the cold winter months, and they look great when I pair them with my favorite skinny jeans. They’re not the most practical of shoes, I’ll admit, but they’re ridiculously warm and comfortable, making them a favorite for many PC girls.

For those of you who aren’t a fan of Uggs, another popular PC alternative is tall leather boots. Unlike Uggs, most leather boots have traction on the soles; making them more practical for the icy, snow weather of winter. Also unlike Uggs, leather boots come in a variety of styles and colors that make it easier to choose ones that are specific to your style. Whether you’re a fan of the comfy Uggs or the chic leather boot, both are popular choices for winter footwear at PC.

3. Leggings

Leggings are pretty much a year round trend here at Providence, but they become particularly popular in the winter when we’re all feeling that “it’s cold and gross and I just don’t feel like looking cute” vibe. Leggings are a great winter staple because they’re so versatile. They can be worn under a cute knit dress for a dressed up look, or with an oversize sweatshirt for a more casual feel. Let me just say this, ladies—The one way leggings should not be worn is as pants. I’m sure you have a great butt, and want to show it off, but please ladies, just say no. Leggings are an undergarment, not a pair of pants.

4. Oversize Sweaters

Oversize sweaters are the PC collegiate’s answer to winter wardrobe blues. On those dreary December days when everything seems extraordinarily difficult, slip on some leggings, a pair of tall leather boots, and an oversize sweater for an instantly chic look. With barely any effort, you look cute and fashionable, while still being just as comfortable as you would have been in sweats. Plus, the simplicity of the outfit makes you seem effortlessly cool, like you always look amazing without even having to try. And what girl doesn’t love that?

5. Scarves

Although it might seem like an obvious winter trend, the girls at PC rock the scarf look in a variety of ways. Some girls pair a warm wool scarf with their North Faces for venturing outside on their way to class, while others will wear a soft patterned scarf over a plain tee to add some glamour to their outfit. Scarves instantly add a little bit of punch to your every day look, and they’re super inexpensive. The scarf is the ultimate winter accessory for PC girls because scarves can instantly change the look of any outfit, and they serve the practical purpose of keeping us warm during the winter season.

November is halfway over, and it’s only going to get colder from here on out. But with these winter trends, the ladies of Providence College should have no problem looking good, keeping warm, and staying on trend!
