Ever wonder how PC got its very own geofilter on Snapchat?? Read this article to find out how one of PC’s students made it all happen for FRIARTOWN!!
1. So, word on the street is that you were the mastermind behind the “Welcome to Friartown” geotag on Snapchat. How exactly did you make this happen?
I think mastermind might be a bit of an overstatement haha, but yeah that’s me! Basically I got the idea from seeing all the really cool and unique geofilters that other colleges and cities had. I thought it was crazy that PC didn’t have something of their own on there, and as soon as I found out that you could submit your own geofilters to the Snapchat website, I started thinking of ideas for something that could represent PC. Fast forward a few weeks and here we are.
2. Did you personally design the Snapchat caption for PC?
I did. So I’ve recently been trying to learn some graphic design basics and figured this might be a good first project, so I downloaded the free trials of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator (because I’m a broke college kid) and got to work. After messing around for a little while I figured out enough to make something half decent looking. I had a few ideas floating around for the filter; GO FRIARS and WELCOME TO FRIARTOWN were a few of my better ones (but to be honest I still kinda wish I went with CIV RULES).
3. How long did it take for Snapchat to respond and make the geotag?
So once you send in your design it has to get approved by the Snapchat team, and the first time I sent one in, I heard back probably about a week and a half later that it was rejected because I messed up on the formatting. So on the next one I was sure to get everything down to a tee. Around 2 weeks later I woke up to an email saying that it was accepted and activated, and the rest is history.
4. Are you planning on asking for any other geotags on Snapchat in the future?
I definitely think it would be really cool to have some more geofilters for PC. Having them for big events like spring concert or Midnight Madness would definitely be a cool way to market the events and get people excited. I’ve also been sketching up ideas for other filters whenever inspiration strikes. I mean yeah, it’s sad to say I peaked my junior year of college, but I guess there are a lot worse things to be known as than “that kid who made the geotag”. But don’t worry, the fame hasn’t gone to my head AT ALL, and I’d be happy to sign autographs for anyone who asks.
Thanks Sam Vaccaro for designing the “WELCOME TO FRIARTOWN” geotag for Snapchat!! Her Campus definitely loves it!
