10 Best Homecoming Traditions

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PS Behrend chapter.

10. South Dakota State’s Hobo Day

This tradition, which is over 100 years old, has withstood the test of time. This “day” is celebrated over the course of seven days, and finishes with a parade to commemorate the week’s events. While it is one of the most bizarre homecoming traditions, it is also one of the most beloved.

9. The Lantern Walk at Arizona State University

Students, faculty, and alums gather to hike the “A” mountain at night with lit lanterns to celebrate their homecoming game. At almost 100 years old, this tradition stands strong!

8. Florida’s Gator Growl

Students and alumnae alike gather in Gainesville for the largest student-run pep rally in the world. Pyrotechnics, skits, cheers, and live music (by the marching band, of course) are all a part of this 80-year-old tradition.

7. University of Missouri’s Blood Drive

Since 1989 the University of Missouri has been hosting this homecoming blood drive. This tradition has gone on to break world records and encourage schools across the country to turn their homecoming event into a charitable one.

6. University of Central Florida Spirit Splash

At the University of Central Florida, students charge the reflecting pool and proceed to celebrate through the day and into the night. Performances by UCF cheerleaders, speeches by the head coach, and appearances by the star players keep the celebration going.

5. Howard University’s Yardfest

While most schools have some sort of festival to celebrate homecoming, Howard University does it bigger and better with their three-day bash equipped with live music to jump-start the celebration.

4. Game Ball Run at Virginia Tech

Long before making its debut on the field, members of ROTC run the game ball all over campus, encouraging other students to touch the ball for good luck. Starting this tradition off with a pep rally, the game ball is constantly moving, traveling over 100 miles before the homecoming game.

3. Running around the Dartmouth Fire

This tradition evolved from a simple bonfire to a towering flame. Each year the freshman class builds the fire (under supervision, because safety first) and proceeds to run a lap around it for their corresponding graduation year… plus 100. Yes, this year the freshmen will run 119 laps around the immense inferno!

2. Lighting the Y at BYU

This 380-foot tall and 130-foot wide “Y” that was once a common occurrence, is now only lit during homecoming week. Hundreds of students make the 1.2-mile uphill trip, with the first 150 given light bulbs to screw into the outline. This 92-year-old tradition shines like a beacon in the night, prepping the students for a week of school spirit.

1. Penn State University Homecoming

Penn State’s homecoming traditions certainly top all the others, but maybe I’m a little biased.  With our whiteout game, tailgating competitions, and homecoming parade, PSU does it right. Alum and students gather together to show their school pride in a weeklong celebration of blue and white. We Are….PENN STATE!
