The 10 Stages of Applying For Internships

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PSU chapter.

Summer is almost here, and the pressure to land an internship is quickly creeping up on us, collegiettes. If you are anything like me, you waited till the last minute to start applying, and all of the good ones are filled. But that doesn’t matter, right? I mean everyone is doing the same thing
I think.

Here are the ten stages all of us are going through (or, if you didn’t procrastinate, went through) when applying to the highly coveted summer internship.

1. You spend hours perfecting your resume. You changed waitress to server and back to waitress a hundred times. Maybe the border needs to be bolded more? Add a space there and then, finally, PERFECTION.

2. You apply to your favorite internship that is WAY out of your league. Need two years prior experience in marketing? Hm
I’m sure they don’t mean that. If I’ve had my Twitter account for two years, that counts, right? Despite knowing you’re underqualified, you start to apply anyway. You’ll just ace the interview ‘cause you’re awesome.

3. You’ve filled in the typical info. Name, birthday, major. But then, they want you to write a cover letter. How in the world do you even write a cover letter? I am qualified for this position? Then throw in any other tidbits that will get you hired.

4. You look over everything for the 100th time because you want this internship so bad. You just can’t bring yourself to hit submit.

Finally, your roommate comes over and hits it. You don’t talk to her for days.

5. A week later, after hating her for what she did to you, you are thanking your roommate to no end. You got an INTERVIEW with your DREAM company!

6. You go to the interview ready for anything. You’ve prepared for days, and you think it goes really well. You wait by the phone for a month, waiting to hear back.

7. When you don’t hear back, you eventually give up and start applying to every internship position you can find. You’ve written so many cover letters you think your hands are going to fall off.

8. You wait by the phone yet again to hear back from any of the thirty places you applied.

9. Finally, you get a call from some start-up that just moved into a building in your city, and they are hiring interns!

10. You go in for an interview and get offered the position on the spot!

Here’s to a summer of running their Facebook and getting coffee for the web designer!
