21 Times That Attempting To Be Hipster Backfired

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PSU chapter.

The hipster lifestyle has injected itself into so much of our culture today, and so far, most of us have had a good bit of fun shopping for old clothes or discovering a widely unknown indie band. However, many of us don’t realize the negative effects that can ensue when trying too hard to pursue the ultimate “authentic look” just for the sake of belonging to a trend or gaining approval. Here are 21 moments where attempting to be hipster did NOT work out as well as we’d hoped.

1. You were so ready to rock that beanie to class every day, but your hair had other plans

2. Driving a car got way too mainstream, but riding that eco-friendly bike was also a bit more dangerous than you anticipated

3. The carnivore lifestyle is definitely not “hip” but you only lasted about two meals on that vegan diet anyway

4. Dressing like a grunge got way too expensive

5. And living at Starbucks with your new designer friend certainly dropkicked your wallet right in the face as well

6. Growing food in your apartment was so natural! Oops, you forgot that everything you touch dies

7. Your friend effortlessly outshined your bohemian outfit with a unique vintage accessory, which somehow led you to overthink your own personality

8. You thought that taking on a new hipster boyfriend would challenge you intellectually; however, his beard seriously got in the way of your relationship

9. Not caring about the norms of society in any way made you a rebel – but not the cool kind of rebel, the douche kind

10. You discovered Tumblr like it was some form of lost buried treasure. Needless to say, it went to your head

11. Habitually checking and posting to Tumblr made you care more about what others thought of you. Ahem… I mean the free-spirited dynamic of your infinite soul

12. That feed of yours got super infinite too

13. And those late nights of scrolling at 3 a.m. really took a toll on your sleep schedule

14. Everything from the photos on your social media timeline to your day-to-day life suddenly became art, which eventually got even more confusing

15.  Even though you just gave up your wasted weeks trying to decide which vintage camera would go well with your “wild passion to capture the beauty of our indescribable universe,” or whatever

16.  Sure, those glasses made you look super smart and adorable – but girl, could you even see?

17. You realized that ukuleles were only meant to be played well by famous people. In other words, people who have a lot more time and patience than you

18. Staying on top of your organization skills to save the earth took a ton of practice

19. It was quite the struggle trying to keep up with the rest of the hipster community by purchasing the latest and greatest Apple products

20. You told yourself, “Just one more pair of Converse sneakers,” while your closet was already overflowing with a bunch of other crap you don’t need

21. You repurchased all of your Lana Del Rey albums on vinyl, barely playing them at all and repurposing them because you were simply too lazy

Showing off your trendy style is great and gives you a chance to express yourself. However, don’t always attempt to be something you’re not. Just because your roommate gets new square frame fake glasses doesn’t mean you need to dress like someone that isn’t you. Follow the trends only if you want too – do what makes you comfortable. Stay true to yourself, collegiettes.
