Journalist and activist Gloria Steinem will be coming to Penn State on November 2nd, and tickets to see her lecture became available this week. Steinem has had various careers, from journalist to activist to leader. Here are five facts you need to know about her.Â
1. In order to demonstrate the sexism and injustice that women faced in the 1960’s, Steinem went undercover as a Playboy Bunny – and then wrote about it in a series of articles called “A Bunny’s Tale.”
2. Steinem helped co-found Ms., a magazine (and organization) for gender equality, in the 1980’s, and it can still be found on shelves today.
3. Steinem fought for equality in politics, society, and on college campuses across the United States. Penn State won’t be the first campus she’s lectured at; Steinem has given lectures on equality at campuses all around the country. Â
4. “My Life on the Road,” Steinem’s best-selling autobiography, will be celebrating its one year publication anniversary next week.
5. According to her autobiography, Steinem voluntarily doesn’t drive – in part because she loves listening to the stories and experiences told by people she comes across while traveling, like taxi drivers.
With the interesting things that Steinem has to talk about in her life, the women of Penn State will surely be excited to see what she talks about!
