Winter is my favorite season by far, but thereâs one thing I donât love about this time of year: staticky hair.Â
The cold, dry winter air pulls out all the moisture and volume from our hair, leaving an uncomfortable staticky do where our luscious locks used to flow.Â
Try as I might, Iâve never found a conditioner or hair mask strong enough to hydrate my hair through the frigid winter months, but there are several hairstyle trends I fall back on when nothing else seems to work.Â
Here are five ways to beat the static this winter without a trip to the salon.Â
#1: Fuzzy Claw Clips
Claw clips first became popular in the â90s, and they have become even more sought-after in the last several years.Â
You can find a claw clip in any shape, size, color and strength. They are sold in the accessories section of a variety of stores, too, ranging from clothing stores like Urban Outfitters and American Eagle to Amazon to your local CVS or Walgreens.
I think a big fuzzy claw clip is the perfect hair accessory for the winter.
It pairs perfectly with a warm, knit sweater. You can dress it up or go casual. The extra fuzzy detail just adds so much to your regular claw clip hairstyles for the wintertime.
#2: Ribbons and Bows
Ribbons and bows have been popping up on my Pinterest feed left and right, and I cannot wait to get some for myself.Â
Theyâre feminine, sophisticated and perfect for the winter holidays.
Imagine a satin bow in your hair with soft curls for a holiday family dinner or silky ribbons to tie your braids with for a fun snowy photoshoot.Â
This hair trick is also cheap. You can find hair ribbons and bows online, or find some at a craft store, but you can also recycle any type of ribbon you already have lying around your house.Â
Bows and ribbons are useful in getting the front strands of hair out of your face, so even if your hair stays staticky like mine, at least it will be out of the way.
#3: Accent Braids
Braids are a great way to keep hair out of your face, and they also protect your hairline from being pulled into a harsh ponytail. Â
If you like half-up half-down styles, try braiding your hair instead of using a claw clip or ponytail to spice it up.Â
Iâm also seeing girls pair accent braids with ribbons and bows for an even more exciting look.Â
Braids are so versatile. You can get creative with a simple 3-strand braid, so you donât even have to know how to do a French or Dutch braid to elevate your hair.Â
I think braids create a cute snowboarder vibe. If youâll be hitting the slopes this winter, try some pigtail braids under your helmet.
#4: Low Ponytail
A low pony can make any outfit look sophisticated and stylish.Â
If you love the slicked-back look, consider trying a slicked-back low ponytail. It will have you feeling like an A-lister all winter long.Â
A low ponytail allows you to get all the hair out of your face, and you can forget about it for the rest of the day. But if youâre careful, it can be less harsh on your hairline than a tight high pony.
If I wear my hair low, but out of my face, I wonât be begging to let my hair down at the end of the day.Â
An additional bonus to this hair look is you can wear it if your hair is too greasy or dirty to leave down.
#5: Headbands
If you donât have any stretchy headbands yet, drop everything and go to your local drugstore or the closest Target. You can find a pack of all-black headbands or different colors for under $10.
Like the low ponytails, headbands are a great way to hide your hair if you have to skip hair wash day but still want to look stylish and put together.Â
If youâre trying to achieve the Blair Waldorf aesthetic, headbands will get you one step closer.Â
I wear stretchy headbands a couple of times a week, and it helps to keep the hair out of my face. Iâm excited to pick up a couple of chunky headbands for the holidays because theyâre so trendy and tasteful.Â
Something simple that I love about these hair tips is that you can mix and match. Tie a ribbon at the base of your low pony, or add a headband to your braids.Â
Braid the front sections of your hair, and throw the rest up into a fuzzy claw clip.Â
Regardless of whether or not you try out any of these hair tricks, letâs all hope for a static-free winter season. Thatâll be at the top of my holiday wishlist.
