March 21, 2013 marked Twitter’s 7th birthday. Can you believe that it has already been seven years since this social media giant launched? With over 500 million registered users worldwide Twitter has become one of the biggest social media sites in the world. Whether you are tweeting where you are, who you’re with, what song you’re listening to, or sharing your opinion on the latest breaking news, Twitter has become the main place to express yourself.
With social media becoming an everyday vital part of business, it is now crucial to insure that every one of your 140 characters is appropriate. Potential employers have started to scour applicants’ Twitter accounts to get an inside look into what thoughts and opinions they share with the world.
The Pros and Cons
As Twitter’s popularity has grown over the past seven years, it has become another place for eager tweeters to showcase their creativity, style and wit, but, be careful. By nature, the impulsivity of tweeting can cost you big time. It is also important to stay as positive and upbeat as you can. A future employer would immediately be turned off to constant negativity; so watch your complaints and frustrations regarding schoolwork, friends etc.
Interests and Goals
Who you follow both personally and professionally is an instant refection of you. If you are interested in a particular industry, Twitter is one of the best places to stay connected and relevant. It is also a great place to show your varied interests as well whether it be music, movies, television or sports. The key is to find a balance between the two.
Remember that Twitter is a social atmosphere and a great way to communicate, network, and highlight you as an individual. But, always think before you Tweet!
Happy 7th Birthday Twitter! Watch here for a look back on the years.
