While film continuations such as sequels and prequels can be controversial, I find them a great and fun way to keep a film world and characters alive. Here are a few of them to look out for in 2024.
- “Inside out 2”
-
“Inside Out” was released in 2015 and remains one of my all-time favorite Disney films. “Inside Out 2” introduces three new emotions: Anxiety, Ennui, Embarrassment, and Envy. With Riley now being a teenager, these new emotions probably sound quite familiar to many of us.
“Inside Out 2” is set to release this summer.
- “Dune: part two”
-
Denis Villeneuve released the first “Dune” film just three years ago and has already planned to release another. Starring an incredible cast of actors like TimotheĆ© Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler and Florence Pugh, “Dune: Part Two” tells the story of Paul’s decision of keeping the love of his life or determining the fate of the universe.
The film is now showing at theaters.
- “A quiet place: day one”
-
“A Quiet Place” released in 2018, told the story of a world in which silence was necessary for survival. The sequel came quickly in 2020. However, the audience was never informed on why the main characters were being hunted by sound-hungry creatures.
This film is a prequel and will tell the audience that story. It is set to release in June.
- Joker: Folie Ć Deux
-
Joaquin Phoenix, one of the newest Jokers in media, will be joined by Lady Gaga for the sequel to the 2019 “Joker” film. Interestingly, this film is also labeled as a musical. There is not yet much information on the film, including no trailer. It is set to release in October.
- “Despicable me 4”
-
A true classic. Just two summers ago, AMC employees were faced with the moviegoers dressed in suits to watch “Minions: Rise of Gru.” “Despicable Me 4” stories a huge development in Gru’s life: a baby boy. Alongside his three girls and wife, Gru and his minions must navigate family life while being on the run.
The film is set to release in July. As an AMC employee, I hope TikTok does not get their hands on this.
- “beetlejuice beetlejuice”
-
The people’s princess, Jenna Ortega, will return to the screen for the sequel to the 1998 film “Beetlejuice.” The sequel will follow-up the iconic horror comedy, which told the story of a ghost who was recruited to haunt a new family home.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is set to release in September. Many of the previous cast will return.
- “Moana 2”
-
Another Disney classic will continue. Some may say, “Disney, please stop,” but I am ecstatic to hear the rest of Moana’s story. Moana will persist in her sailing journey after receiving a call from her wayfinding ancestors. The film is set to release in November.
Upon reading this list, keep an open mind. Film is a way of story-telling and many stories continue with a strong sense of imagination. See you at the movies!
