For most collegiettes, the month of October means college football, pumpkin spice lattes and cozy sweaters. While those are all well and good, this month also means awareness for two very worthy causes. Many of you are probably already familiar with Breast Cancer Awareness Month and hopefully do your part in supporting the pink, but what you may be unaware of is that October is also nationally recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. According to the Domestic Violence Awareness Project:
“Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) evolved from the “Day of Unity” held in October 1981 and conceived by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children.”
This organization, along with its supporters, has been spreading advocacy and awareness by mourning those we have lost, celebrating those who have lived and connecting those who work to end the violence with the people who need it most.
Representatives of the Her Campus Penn State team were proud to support this cause and the Centre County Women’s Resource Center by walking a mile across downtown State College in high heels during the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event this past Sunday. The walk was hosted at Penn State by Sisters on the Runway PSU, Alpha Kappa Lambda, and Alpha Chi Omega and the event was able to raise over $600 for the fight against domestic violence.
We are happy to have been a part of such a deserving cause and want to congratulate everyone involved in making the event such a success. If you are a Penn State student and want to become more involved in ending domestic abuse, be sure to check out Sisters on the Runway PSU.
