Just over two weeks ago, Lana Del Rey released her ninth studio album titled “Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd.” The album features a mix of folk, pop, alternative and vintage tracks that accompany Del Rey’s beautiful vocals.
In regards to the versatility of this album, I’ve assigned each zodiac sign a corresponding song reflective of their individual traits. Without further ado, I hope you enjoy the following pairings!
- Aries β “PARIS, TEXAS (FEAT. SYML)”
-
“When everyone’s star is bright / Brighter than you are / It’s time to go / And you’re the only one left / Dancin’ while they’re on the floor / Time to go”
In “Paris, Texas (feat. SYML),” Del Rey says that “it’s time to go” as she leaves her current home. She knows that there is no longer a spot for her energy there, which is why she makes the decision to relocate and make new connections.
Aries always prove to be powerful and driven leaders. Determination rules their personalities, which is why they are ready to leave any situation that is no longer serving them. While it may be an impulsive decision, Aries never regret leaving an environment where they don’t flourish.
- taurus β “Kintsugi”
-
“There’s a certain point the body can’t come back from”
Del Rey names “Kintsugi” after the Japanese art form of repairing cracks in glassware or pottery with gold or silver adhesive. Rather than repairing an object to its original form, “Kintsugi” appreciates an object’s newfound value because of its damaged history.
As the most stubborn sign of the zodiac, Tauruses must fully commit to repairing themselves. While they are down-to-earth and reliable, they may be adamant when it comes to changing their own routine and working on their faults.
For Tauruses, it’s not as easy to mend themselves in private so their efforts may be noticeable to other people like the process of “Kintsugi.”
- gemini β “taco truck x vb”
-
“Soundin’ off bang bang kiss kiss”
Given the magnificent duality of this song, Geminis fully embody “Taco Truck x VB.” This song is split into two segments: “Taco Truck” and “VB” β the beautiful background vocals of Del Rey’s “Venice Bitch.”
While the track is comprised of these two segments, they are extremely different in style. This quick contrast highlights Del Rey’s exemplary range β similar to a Gemini’s dual-personality.
Geminis are notorious for their dual personalities so much that they are represented by the twins. While they can be loving and generous, they can switch to a reserved and temperamental personality just as fast.
- cancer β “The grants”
-
“I’m gonna take / Mine of you with me / Like ‘Rocky Mountain High’ / The way John Denver sings”
In “The Grants,” Del Rey sings fondly of memories with her loved ones and explains that she will bring them with her before she dies. She also suggests that family is extremely important to her as she mentions her “sister’s first-born child” and her “grandmother’s last smile.”
As the most nurturing sign of the zodiac, Cancers are extremely representative of this track. A Cancer herself, Del Rey shares this intuition, emotion and comfort.
Cancers, like Del Rey, value time with their loved ones more than anything. It’s no surprise that she chose this track to open the rest of the album!
- leo β “PEPPERS (feat. tommy genesis)”
-
“Hands on your knees, Angelina Jolie / Let me put my hands on your knees you can braid my hair”
Most likely, Del Rey and Genesis are referring to Angelina Jolie’s fictional character from “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.” Lara Croft has been a sex symbol for more than two decades and carries an arching theme of confidence within the track.
Leos are known for exuding confidence and glamour. They can also engage in some reckless love, which we also see throughout the song as Del Rey says she doesn’t “have much to lose.”
- VIRGO β “fingertips”
-
“It’s said that my mind / Is not fit, or so they said, to carry a child / I guess I’ll be fine”
Arguably the most vulnerable track of the album, Del Rey speaks of her intimate experiences with death, loneliness and youth on “Fingertips.” Del Rey also considers her future as she questions the longevity of her life.
As the analysts of the zodiac, Virgos will always be meticulous. Virgos tend to be very self-aware and receptive to other people’s emotions. Like Del Rey in this track, they gravitate towards their own past experiences or traumas in a reflective manner rather than an emotional one.
- libra β “LET THE LIGHT IN (FEAT. FATHER JOHN MISTY)”
-
“Ooh, let the light in / At your back door yelling ’cause I wanna come in / Ooh, turn your light on / Look at us, you and I, back at it again”
“Let The Light In (feat. Father John Misty)” features Del Rey asking her lover to “let the light in” during the chorus. One interpretation of this song suggests Del Rey’s lover to be in a long-term relationship with another woman while Del Rey waits around at the “back door.”
Libras are known to be persuasive signs and negotiators. They are concerned with justice and harmony, just as Del Rey is concerned with bringing this relationship into the light. More often than not, a Libra’s appreciation for the truth will shine through their personality.
- scorpio β “DID YOU KNOW THAT THERE’S A TUNNEL UNDER OCEAN BLVD”
-
“When’s it gonna be my turn? / Don’t forget me”
Throughout “Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd,” Del Rey references a tunnel that has been abandoned under Ocean Boulevard. She continues to ask when it will be her turn to be forgotten by the public as well.
Del Rey asks for someone to love her until she loves herself so she will no longer be afraid of abandonment.
While Scorpios are determined and loving, they can secretly be insecure and paranoid at times. In fact, many Scorpios can inhibit a fear of abandonment if they are not reassured enough.
- saggitarius βΒ “Fishtail”
-
“Don’t you dare say that you’ll braid my hair, babe / If you don’t really care / You wanted me sadder”
Del Rey refuses affection in “Fishtail” from anyone who doesn’t genuinely care about her. She then goes on to say her partner wants her “sadder,” or easier to emotionally manipulate. Del Rey acknowledges this and makes her partner take accountability for their toxic behavior.
It’s very rare to keep a Sagittarius tied to a relationship. That being said, as soon as a Sagittarius feels cornered, they won’t hesitate to abandon the relationship.
Perhaps if they weren’t so confident or sure of themselves, they would tolerate anything less than they deserve.
- capricorn β “CANDY NECKLACE (feat. Jon Batiste)”
-
“Rockafella, my umbrella / God, I love you, baby / Fortune teller, favorite ever, That’s the story of us”
In “Candy Necklace (feat. Jon Batiste),” Del Rey reflects on her powerful relationship and acknowledges the potential toxicity.
While her partner provides for her financially, she feels like there is something missing which must be addressed. Instead of acknowledging this missing component, her partner distracts her with “candy necklaces.”
Capricorns are known to be hard workers and ambitious leaders. These traits mostly reflect in their careers. That being said, Capricorns may find it hard to distinguish non-toxic love if it mixes with their professional pursuits.
- AQUARIUS β “Grandfather please stand on the shoulders of my father while he’s deep sea fishing”
-
“I know they think that it took somebody else / To make me beautiful, beautiful / As they intended me to be, but they’re wrong”
In this track, Del Rey refuses any claims that she is not authentic or her true self. Many critics speculate that Del Rey carries a persona that isn’t representative of her personality. In reference to these claims, Del Rey powerfully states that “they’re wrong.”
The individualists of the zodiac, Aquariuses are well-acquainted with criticism about their own authentic selves. Aquariuses are known to be independent trendsetters. They have a tendency to participate in the counterculture like Del Rey has throughout her music career.
- PISCES β “MARGARET (FEAT. BLEACHERS)”
-
“He met Margaret on a rooftop, she was wearin’ white / And he was like, ‘I might be in trouble'”
“Margaret (feat. Bleachers)” is a love song dedicated to Jack Antonoff’s fiancΓ©, Margaret Qualley. This ballad features Del Rey’s romantic vocals as she and Antonoff manifest his assurance of this love.
Pisces are known to be the most romantic sign of the zodiac. When a Pisces is demonstrating their love for someone, they’ll typically do so through an art form. I was very surprised to discover that Antonoff is not a Pisces after collaborating on this gorgeous track!
While these tracks can be interpreted in a multitude of ways, I found it so fun analyzing them from an astrological lens. Whether you feel the same way about these songs or not, we can all appreciate Lana Del Rey’s magnificent versatility and musical depth.
