What I’m Looking Forward to in 2023

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PSU chapter.

It’s the end of 2022 and the New Year is upon us. I am a big believer in putting out into the universe what I want. With that, here are a few things I want to achieve in 2023.

Taking care of my mental health

This past year was one of, if not the busiest, year of my life. I worked extremely hard to stay on top of my academics among all of my other obligations. At times, instead of taking necessary breaks, I would push through whatever large task I was working on.

Whenever I inevitably hit burnout, I still attempted to push through until I physically couldn’t do it anymore. It took a good friend of mine to remind me that I can’t expect to give 100% to others if I’m not giving it to myself.

It’s perfectly okay to put yourselves first. Sometimes we have to remind ourselves of this in the fast-paced world we live in. Your mind, just like your body, needs a break and deserves to be listened to.

Working Out Consistently

In high school, I was extremely active in athletics. For three and a half years, I either worked out or participated in sports every day. Now that I’m in college without a consistent schedule, I have found myself not as active as I would like to be.

While exercise is by no means my favorite activity, I know my body will thank me in later years for taking care of it. Remember it’s okay to go at the pace that’s meant for you. Looking, but more importantly, feeling your best is not a competition by any means.

I plan to start going to the gym with my girlfriends so that it feels less like a task on my schedule and more like an opportunity to bond. I will also feel less inclined to make excuses for why I can’t go as I don’t want to feel like I’m abandoning them.

Learning to let go

In my opinion, this will be the most difficult of my resolutions to follow. I tend to worry about things that I have no control over, and I go over every possible scenario in my mind before I make any big decisions.

I also have a tendency to dwell on the past, even though there is nothing that can be done to change it. However, focusing on what can’t be changed does nothing but bring unnecessary stress into your life. Learning to let go and live in the moment is one of the best things I can do for myself.

Life is short, so why not make the most of it while you can? What good does holding grudges and stressing about the impossible do for me?

2023 is here. What that means is there is a chance for a fresh start and new beginnings for the spring semester. We can use this new year as a means for growth and an opportunity to learn from our pasts in order to move forward, hopefully for the better.
