For all of you single college girls out there, I have one piece advice for you. Stay single.

This isn’t a knock on anyone in a happy relationship, but a call to every girl in college who doesn’t know if she wants to stay single or be cuffed by Valentine’s Day. If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times. Be single in college.

If you’re doubting this advice, here are some reasons why you will realize how great the college single life is for us girls.

You can do whatever you want whenever you want.

I don’t mean this in a way that if you’re dating someone you’re being controlled by them, but if you feel like making a spontaneous decision, it is completely up to you while single. You could decide to fly to another state for the weekend (in pre-Covid times), go completely off the map for a few days or do something totally crazy just because you can.

You don’t need to take into account someone else’s thoughts or feelings when making a decision

When you’re in a relationship, you’re supposed to be considerate of your partner’s feelings and include them in many of your decisions. When you’re single, you only need to worry about what YOU want and how it will make YOU feel. You get to be completely selfish all the time, which honestly isn’t a bad thing in this case.

You don’t need to spend money on Valentine’s Day, Christmas, or birthday gifts for your significant other

This right here is a game changer for your wallet. These gifts add up, and honestly, who has the money to afford expensive gifts in college? Not to mention the stress that comes along with picking out the perfect gift or worrying how much they’re spending on you to make sure you stay in the same price range. No thank you.

College could be the last time you are truly single

Who knows what will happen in the future. Maybe you’ll be married one year post college, 10 years later or never. You can’t predict what will happen. Appreciate the time that you know you have to be single, because this time in your life may never come again. You should take advantage of it.

You can become more comfortable with who you are

I am a strong believer that being single helps you grow through self love. It’s great to have someone else love you, but if you can’t learn to love yourself and accept who you are first, you will never feel truly whole.

More time with your friends

No relationship equals more time to hang out with your friends. It also means you don’t need to figure out how to balance the time you spend with your significant other and your friends, which can be very stressful.

All in all, being single in college is a great option for so many different reasons. You will never get a chance to live your life as freely as when you are young and single. There is no better time to learn more about yourself than you will in these four years. Of course there’s absolutely nothing wrong with being in a relationship either, as long as you’re happy. But if you’re single, or thinking about being single, know that you definitely can’t go wrong with being on your own (at least for a while).
