Your Spring Break Get Away Dos and Don’ts

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PSU chapter.

Back in middle school and high school, I remember casually relaxing on my couch and flicking on “MTV Spring Break.” I thought the people we’re absolutely crazy.  They were dancing around in neon bikinis and having the time of their lives.  Time quickly lapsed and I can’t believe I am going on a spring break excursion now—no parents or adults—just all of my best friends.  Although this sounds like a dream come true, there are many reasons to be wary when going to an exotic location overseas, like Mexico, by myself. Sure, maxing out my credit card by ordering new bikinis is on a list of priorities, but in reality, my safety comes first.

If you’re lucky enough to be finally soaking up some much-needed sun, here are some tips to ensure a good and safe time as soon as you hop off the plane.

1.      What to pack

Despite the chaos and excitement, it is important to realize that when going out of the United States, anything you think you may need, you should bring.

Food/Drinks: Tap water in other countries may not be clean, so if there is room in the suitcase pack bottles of water!  Also, it is smart to pack some little snacks like granola bars for convenience incase of hunger and to save money.

Clothing: Tons of pictures will be taken while hanging out in your bathing suits so pack extra.  That way, you will never run out of options and can mix and match to look super cute and sport a different style each day.  Pack extra flip-flops too.  They’re a super easy item to lose and the concrete floor would be super hot if you had to struggle on it barefoot, ouch!

Basics: Ibuprofen that contains no acetaminophen (verses alternatives like Advil, that do and can be toxic when mixed with alcohol) and sunscreen are two obvious additions to the luggage of yours.  You never know when you may not feel well and you certainly want to get a healthy glow on the beach, not sunburn!  However, pack aloe just incase in case. Looks like Kim K could use some, too.

2.      What NOT to pack

While out by the pool or beach, it is rare that you will be wearing anything but your swimsuit.  Limit the amount of daytime clothing you pack so that you have more room for your fun going-out clothes.  Also, don’t pack expensive jewelry or expensive sunglasses (bring your cheap, fun ones).  There is a strong chance you can lose something valuable and no one want’s to have to deal scavenging for items when you’re supposed to be enjoying yourself.

3.      Viva la noche!

Nightlife is arguably one of the amazing things about any foreign country.  Restrictions aren’t as strict and the clubs are amazing with awesome DJs performing.  However, it is important to always be super safe.  Never travel alone and keep tabs on all your friends at all times.  If taking a cab, be polite and friendly.  Be careful with your room key and wallet (and anything important you take out for that matter).   If swapping your adorable new clothes with your friends, remember who borrows it and make sure it is returned.

So, if you’re traveling to an exotic location where it is finally warm, take advantage and enjoy every second. Come back to the United States safely and bring your tan, pictures, and memories home with you.
