Glow from the inside out: five foods you should start eating for clear skin, hair and life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Purdue chapter.

“Hot girls have stomach issues”. I’ve seen this sentence way too many times on TikTok, where girls complain about their IBS problems and other digestive issues. The truth is, you shouldn’t have to feel this way. You shouldn’t feel uncomfortable after eating or feel bloated all the time. Food should make you feel energized, radiant and amazing. Here are 5 foods that are amazing for gut health, skin, hair and that will overall make you glow.

1. Yogurt

Not only is it delicious and incredibly versatile, yogurt is full of probiotics, which aids digestion and helps your tummy be happy and healthy. Yogurt is also full of protein and calcium, which help you have strong hair and nails. There are so many varieties of yogurt and ways to eat it, the possibilities are truly endless. My favorite way? Greek yogurt with berries, banana, granola and a drizzle of raw honey.

2. Salmon

Oily fish are full of Omega-3 and healthy fats, which are amazing for your skin, helping it become soft and moisturized. Salmon is also a great brain food (make sure you eat it before finals). I love eating salmon in poke bowls, sushi and of course in any of Emily Mariko’s viral recipes.

3. Avocado

Delicious, creamy and incredibly healthy, avocado is one of the best foods to make you feel and look your best. It has super healthy fats, along with vitamin E and K, which prevents aging and protects your skin. Make some avocado toast as part of your skincare routine!

4. Berries

Fruits of any king are amazing for you, but berries in particular are full of antioxidants which help your immune system and prevent aging. Frozen or fresh, you can eat berries in any way you like. I love topping my oatmeal with strawberries and peanut butter, as well as making banana-berry smoothie bowls.

5. Nuts and chocolate

Nuts like almonds and walnuts are full of magnesium and minerals which help nourish your body and make you glow. Chocolate is a delicious way to obtain antioxidants, improve circulation and produce endorphins (aka the happiness hormone). Add chocolate granola and peanut butter to your yogurt or smoothie bowls to get both of these amazing superfoods.
