Meet Joel, an engineer who claims “nobody survives engineering.” When he’s not in the lab doing homework, he is crafting “borderline inappropriate” Facebook statuses that exhibit his sarcastic humor. But don’t let this persona fool you. Joel is a kind-hearted fellow who has spent his past three unconventional spring breaks on mission trips in New Orleans and West Virginia. He also plans to spend a week in Haiti during Christmas break. Joel is also a superb wingman. This past weekend, he picked a rose and left it on the door of his friend’s crush and signed a note with his friend’s name. Apparently, she was very pleased.
Name: Joel Lugo
Year: Senior
Major: Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering
Hometown: Noblesville, IN
Activities: Intramural soccer and intramural volleyball…What else do I do? I play Halo a lot, but that’s not really a cool thing.
Relationship Status: Single and looking!
HC: Is it true that you’ve never missed a Sunday of church?
JL: Oh my gosh, unfortunately, no. I missed this last weekend because I didn’t get home in time. I felt so bad, so I went to confession. Not really. But I did sit and eat my breakfast on some church steps, so that kind of counts.
HC: How did you become such a nice guy?
JL: I don’t know if I like this question. I was basically raised by my sisters, so I always heard them crying about guys and stuff.
HC: What attributes in a female attract you the most?
JL: (They) have to have pretty eyes. To go along with the eyes, she has to have a pretty face. I like dark hair, an athletic body. I also like someone who is very sarcastic and likes to joke around.
HC: What is your biggest turn-off?
JL: That’s hard. I’m almost so desperate, I don’t even think about turn-offs.
HC: Last song you listened to?
JL: (The) last song I sang along to was Adele’s “Someone Like You.” I love that song. She has a great voice.
HC: Worst bar conversation?
JL: Probably when you go up to a girl and say “hi” and introduce yourself, and she walks away. I go home afterward and cry myself to sleep.
HC: What types of hairstyles have you had?
JL: Oh, so many, at least seven since elementary school. The most popular is probably my current one, but my favorite was when I bleached my hair.
HC: How would you describe your bromances?
JL: There are a lot of them. My main group of friends, we’ve been together since fifth grade, so we are very close. With my roommates, there’s lots of snuggle time, or mostly me trying to snuggle with them.
HC: So, would you call yourself a snuggler then?
JL: Mhmm yes, but only as a little spoon.
