Just like the majority of college students, I want a puppy. For years I have tried to persuade my parents to get me a dog. I have continually reminded them of how responsible I am and how loving I would be to the puppy. But recently I found a new approach. I will persuade my parents to get me a puppy via science.

To Stay Fit

Dogs need a lot of walking, especially since I live in an apartment. Dogs need at least 30 active minutes a day which could include walking, throwing a ball, or running. Having the responsibility of exercising my puppy would definitely help me become more active as well. I would have to start waking earlier and I would have to walk it several times a day so it goes to the bathroom.

To Reduce Stress

Simply petting a dog can lower blood pressure and stress levels (which I have major issues with). If getting a dog just slightly decreases my stress, than the dog is 100% worth it! Some studies say just 15 minutes with a dog can make you feel relaxed and calm. My puppy could help me stay calm while taking quizzes or studying for big exams.

Improve Mental Health

Owning a dog can also help your mental health. Dogs have been shown to help Alzheimer’s patients with memory and keep them to a schedule. They are also beneficial to less severe mental diseases, like depression. Animals can help give a sense of purpose to some people which can help mental diseases. Dog therapy is an actual type of therapy where you basically get to pet puppies to help your mental state.

To Maintain a Schedule

Dogs need to be on regular schedules. I am normally the person that could sleep in until noon. I know that having a puppy would combat this bad habit of mine. I would have to wake up early to walk and feed the puppy before I get ready for class.

Other health benefits include:

-Detection of heart attacks/seizures is actually a well known benefit of both cats and dogs. They are able to alert other members of the house when something is wrong.

-Allergies are proven to be decreased with the presence of a dog. If you own a dog, it can decrease the likelihood of your child having an allergy to pets.

With these health benefits I hope to persuade my parents into getting me an adorable puppy to improve my way of life.
