The election is coming up, and I am sure everyone is either getting ready to vote or has already voted. My family and I voted with our mail-in ballots by dropping them off a few days after we received them at our local election headquarters.

I feel very privileged this year to be able to vote in such an important election. I was also privileged enough to be able to have a conversation with Senator Gillibrand. Being a part of Her Campus, I was able to attend a press conference where we got to ask Senator Gillibrand questions through the Her Campus founder, Windsor Hanger Western.

Senator Gillibrand is a Senator in New York and serves the Democratic party. She is a powerful speaker and focused her time on motivating us to not only vote but make a positive difference in our communities.

“It’s probably the most important election of your lifetime,” said Senator Gillibrand. She continually emphasized that this year more than ever this election is so important. There is so much on the line that will impact us, all the way from women’s rights to the environment. As young women we need to make sure our voices are heard, and we can do that this year through casting our votes.

“If young, college-age women don’t vote, then those who get elected will not actually represent our values,” said Gillibrand. I think that really speaks to people my age. People my age that were not eligible to vote in the last election that saw firsthand the things that matter to them get ignored, or even worse, the things that mattered to them and to me hurt by the people that have been elected.

“It’s our country, it’s your future, it’s our democracy that’s at stake,” said Senator Gillibrand. It is a privilege that we live in a democracy and are able to have a voice and a vote. It is our duty to vote so that not only are we represented, but we are heard, and we can work together to make actual positive change in the country.
