Why Spring Break Needs to Be Longer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Purdue chapter.

This week many students returned to their long, boring classes. I am sure that I am not the only student who was not ready for my classes to resume. Here’s a list to why spring break should be longer:

Spring Break Makes You Exhausted

I honestly came back to school even more exhausted than when I left for Spring Break. It might have been because I took over 20,000 steps daily while on break, but I also came back dehydrated and jet lagged. Spring Break is filled with late nights and bad eating habits so it’s no surprise our bodies need a break after the break. I could not even imagine going somewhere like Florida and partying all week to come back to campus and be in the mood to study right away.

Fall Semester Has More Breaks

This is one thing I have always hated about spring semester. There are so few breaks. During the first semester, there’s Labor Day, October Break, and Thanksgiving vacation while spring semester gets one day off for Martin Luther King Jr. Day and then Spring Break. We should at least get a day off for Easter. The breaks in first semester are also pretty evenly spread out, whereas there are no more breaks after March during second semester.

Winter Blues Suck

Being in Indiana, most winter weather occurs in the second semester which increases the amount of weather related depression. A lack of vitamin D from the sun causes this change in mood. There should be more days to relax and go on trips if we wish. Coming back to Indiana after being somewhere that was sunny and 65 all week can really bring down your mood.

Spring Classes are More Stressful

I do not know if it’s just my luck but every single spring semester has been significantly more difficult than my fall semester. My spring classes all have more assignments and projects due each week compared to the work from first semester. They also are also more difficult classes than what I took in the fall semester.

March Madness

The biggest tournament in basketball started the week of Spring Break and our beloved Boilermaker team made it in this year. I wish I could have more time to focus on my bracket and cheer on our home team. Sadly I have three exams to study for and I am unable to even watch most of the games.

Unfortunately, we cannot just skip all our classes and just sleep. Just try to stay hydrated, get a regular sleep schedule, and continue studying hard.
