Campus Cutie: Her Campus Queen’s University Writers
What is a movie that changed your life?
Name: Rachel
A: What’s Your Number, because it taught me that sometimes things are in our past for a reason, and should stay there. It also taught me that the future will be brighter (and may include Chris Evans, and well, that’s the best possible future I can imagine!)
Name: Jess
A: I would have to say Dead Poets Society. I think it was because I realized how much of a “writer” I was, which is kind of lame. I realized that I would never be able to escape the relationship I have with literature and art, like it was something I could never run away from. Kind of like, a marriage to words. Yeah, pretty lame. But also kind of comforting.
If you could master any skill what would it be?
Name: Chloe
A: To be able to become fluent in all the languages I know. Ever heard of the phase “Jack of all trades, Master of none?” Yeah, that’s me with languages.
Name: Laura
A: I’ve been wanting to learn how to sew for a little while. I think it would be fun and really useful to be able to tailor and even make clothes, especially in order to upcycle old pieces.
Can you recommend a place that everyone has to visit at least once in Kingston?
Name: Elisa
A: Fort Henry. It’s one of the best historic sites here. I personally love visiting for Fort Fright, which is the haunted house-type thing they set up every year on Halloween. If you’re a horror junkie like me, it will definitely become your favourite event of the year.
Name: Sarah Binda
A: Tommy’s. It’s hands-down the best place to grab brunch with your friends after a night out. The menu is endless and budget friendly, and everything is fantastic! From eggs benny to ginormous burgers, pancakes to poutine, I have never left Tommy’s hungry, more so I leave feeling like my stomach is about to burst! It is also open 24 hours on Fridays and Saturdays, and with its location right in the hub, it is the perfect spot to grab some drunchies!
What do you do when you get writer’s block?
Name: Sophie Zhou
A: Listen to music. I find that music sets the mood and tone for whatever I want to write very effectively, so I try to immerse myself with the type of music that would best suit whichever piece (fiction or non-fiction) I’m trying to write. I also read a lot, of course, because seeing others succeed in writing motivates me to also want to write.
What is a recipe that people have to try?
Name: Molly Armstrong
A: Veggie Black Bean Burgers! I’m not a vegetarian, but they’re amazingly yummy, filling and easy to make. You and your housemates are bound to love them! I like to use this Pampered Chef recipe:
