So you want to go to the gym, but you’re scared. Maybe it’s the daunting thought that people are judging you, or the fear that you’re going to hurt yourself because you don’t know what you are doing. The truth is, the gym can be a scary place, but once you learn how to use your fear to accomplish your goals, it can become a safe haven for you — a place to go when you need to unload, de-stress, or just break a sweat. Here are some ideas you can use to combat your fear of lifting and hit the gym!
- Firstly, try to understand that most people are more concerned with their own workouts than with yours.
-
I know this one can be hard to believe, but it’s true! Most of the time, people at the gym are primarily concerned about their own workout, hitting their goals, and breaking a sweat. If you do catch people looking at you, odds are they’re either looking to see how you do a certain exercise for inspiration, or because they are just as insecure and scared about being in the gym as you are.Â
- Wear clothes you feel comfortable and confident in.Â
-
This goes for clothes that you feel comfortable moving around in, but also clothes you feel comfortable wearing in public. If the thought of people staring at you and judging you are your primary sources of anxiety about the gym, wearing clothing that makes you feel comfortable but confident are extremely necessary. This being said, don’t be afraid to rock a sports bra and shorts if you have the confidence– embrace your body!
- Headphones in, world out.
-
The motto! Find a gym playlist (or a podcast) that will pump you up and get you in the mood to pump some iron. Play that music as loud as you want;Â let it drown out your thoughts and your anxieties.
- Take advantage of your gym’s “women only” section.Â
-
If your gym has a women’s only section, use that to your advantage! You won’t have to worry about being intimidated by men, if that’s a concern of yours. However, keep in mind, some women will be in there for the same reason as you, so don’t worry about wandering eyes!
- Find a workout buddy.
-
Finding a partner to workout with can help motivate you to hit the gym, and can make the thought of going in there a little less scary.
- Watch some YouTube and Instagram videos for inspiration and tips on form, workout splits, and general gym advice.
-
This was a huge thing for me when I first started going to the gym! Getting tips from Youtube and Instagram such as specific forms or how to use machines really helped me find the confidence to step into the gym and figure out what I’m doing a bit better. Find some workout videos and practice your form in a mirror. When you’re in the gym, don’t be afraid to look in the mirror to gauge your form too!
- Keep your focus on your journey and only your journey.
-
You will never grow if you focus on the success of others. When you go to the gym, use it as a time to work on and connect with yourself, and grow as a person – both inside and out. The second you compare yourself to others is the moment your progress and growth is compromised. Remember, everyone else is in there to better themselves, too!
