Thanks to a combination of equal parts student ingenuity and student laziness, the “mug recipe” trend has been on an incline lately. That is, all foods that you can mix together in a mug, microwave, and eat! The benefits to this? Fast preparation time, almost impossible to screw up, and most importantly: minimal dish washing, because if that isn’t magical, I don’t know what is. Sometimes, though, it’s hard to decipher good recipe from just plain impractical ones, so we tested out a few recipes and did it for you! Check back each week this month as we review a new mug recipe to get you through the end of the semester. We ran into some clever and some not-so-clever ideas that you might want to try yourself! And if you do, all the recipes we tried can be found here: http://food.allwomenstalk.com/meals-in-a-mug-recipes-youve-got-to-try
Cost: $$
The cost for the Nutella mug cake was very affordable considering that we had many of the ingredients on hand. We were missing cocoa powder and baking powder but we managed to make a very affordable and tasty dessert treat.
Convenience: 4/5
This was a very convenient dessert if you decided a quick late night treat after dinner and only had the basic ingredients on hand. Most of the ingredients mentioned in the recipe can be found in your fridge or pantry.
Taste and Texture: 5.5/5
Honestly, if 5.5/5 stars existed, that’s what I would give this mug cake. It was honestly the best one out of all the 4 that we tried and definitely my favourite. It was sweet (like how a Nutella cake should taste like), but definitely could be adjusted to taste. The chocolate taste was not as rich as regular chocolate cake, but that could be because we were missing the cocoa powder in our ingredients (try it out with cocoa powder and let us know if it tastes more chocolatey)! It was not lumpy, very smooth and spongy; tasted like heaven in a mug.
That’s all for now! Next up, Quiche in a Cup.
