5 Things we Think Guys Like but Actually Hate

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Quinnipiac chapter.

From beauty tips to party behavior, there are always things that girls think boys like, when in fact it’s the opposite. So many things we think are cute or think our boyfriends will like, are actually huge turnoffs. It’s fine to do something you like for yourself, but if you are doing something to impress a boy, try to avoid these five things.

1.Heavy Makeup: Although some makeup can be cute and highlight your best facial features, too much makes you look tacky and artificial. Some girls are heavy with the eye liner and mascara, while others cake on the foundation and plaster their lids with eye shadow. Unless it is Halloween, boys prefer to see the face of the girl they are dating, or even just flirting with. If a girl is wearing too much makeup, a guy might think that she has something to hide. So wipe off your mask and let them see your beautiful and natural face.

2.Long Fingernails: Why would a boy want to hold a girl’s hand when her finger nails are longer than a lion’s? Those long, artificial nails not only look cheap, but they are also a hazard! Those things could take an eye out or scratch your boyfriend – and not in a good way. Natural long nails are fine, but guys tend to prefer regular length, well manicured nails that can run through their hair without drawing blood.

3.Sticky Lip Gloss: This one is especially important if you plan on kissing your date. Wearing a ton of sticky lip gloss can look good from afar, but when your guy comes in for a kiss, do you really want him to be wearing lip gloss for the rest of the night? Also, getting your hair stuck to your lips is not cute. Not only will you look like a fool, but you’ll have residual goop stuck in your hair for the rest of the night. My tip: stick to shimmering chap stick or natural lips that won’t steer your guy away from puckering up.

4.  That Loud Girl: You may think you are being the life of the party, but being loud and obnoxious is not attractive. A guy is more likely to notice the cool, calm, and collected girl in the background rather than the sloppy thunderous girl who is demanding attention in the forefront. I’m not saying don’t be outgoing or energetic, but realize that there is a fine line between being sociable and being the obnoxious center of attention.

5.Showing Too Much Skin: Although guys tend to ogle at anything a girl chooses to expose, such as cleavage, rock hard abs, or super model legs, revealing too much skin can be seen as desperate and classless. My philosophy is to show a little, but leave a little for their imagination. A woman needs to have some air of mystery about her, so why not keep the guys guessing about what’s underneath our super stylish clothes? If a girl dresses skanky, then a guy will think that she is easy. If a girl covers up a bit more, he’ll know that he has to work a little harder to get to see the rest. I’m not saying to dress up like a nun on a Friday night, but don’t dress like a stripper either.

Again, if you enjoy doing any of these things for yourself and don’t care what others think about you, more power to ya! This is just a heads up for what the boys do not like. So if you are trying to get a boy’s attention or impress your boyfriend, steer clear of any of these five things.
