Remember the name. 24KT (twenty-four karat) KidLivin is an audio blog Facebook page devoted to exposing our generation to music beyond the mainstream, repetitive radio. Updated twice daily over the past six months, it has accumulated over 1,100 fans hailing from Massachusetts to Oregon, and the men behind the music don’t plan on stopping there.
Â
Over the years, friends have looked to co-founders and Quinnipiac seniors, Tim McMinn and Jason Siegel for music suggestions at parties and gatherings. But since 24KT’s creation in July 2010, they have reached audiences and received feedback beyond expectation.
Â
“We get feedback from people we’ve never met,” Siegel said.
“It’s all been really good,” McMinn added.
Â
McMinn and Siegel held a contest in November for 24KT’s fans; the submitter of the best three songs would win 10 days of being an administrator of the page. The majority of participants resided out of state. “The kid who won was from Florida,” Siegel said.
Â
The co-founders spend a large portion of their days listening to and filtering songs for their fans. “We’re on mailing lists for a bunch of artists, we look at other blogs, and most of all we search YouTube,” Siegel said.
Â
Accordingly, they have difficulty settling on their favorite artists. “It definitely changes a lot,” McMinn said. “Of recent, these last couple of days, mine is Mimosa. He has some harder stuff but it’s also more relaxing.”
Â
“I’m gonna stick with King Fantastic,” Siegel said. “He’s a newer rap artist out of L.A.”
Â
They’re more than willing to seek out local artists as well. One featured recording artist is Denis (Denny Darko) Mitchell, a QU senior who wrote, rapped and recorded “Blue and Yellow” in the name of Bobcat spirit. Denny Darko released a single in December exclusive to 24KT.
Â
Don’t expect the blog to go quiet after McMinn and Siegel graduate. Their plans include eventually shaping a publication around the blog based upon the lifestyle that comes with a love of discovering new music. “There’s nothing else out there that’s comparable to what we want to do,” Siegel said. “If all goes to plan, it’ll be a big name.”
Â
While they look for investors, they are considering investing full time in the music industry, themselves. Siegel interned at a music publishing business in summer 2010 and while McMinn is pursuing an education in film, 24KT has opened his mind to career opportunities in music. “If it was an option for me, I definitely would,” McMinn said.
