On Sunday, Feb. 8, the 2015 Grammy Awards took place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Â Celebrities walked down the red carpet in their beautiful dresses and tailored suits, talking to entertainment correspondents to discuss their upcoming projects, personal lives, music and outfits of choice for the evening. Â However, one nominee was notably absent for the majority of the pre-show.
Rihanna, who took home a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration with Eminem for their track “The Monster,” showed up to the red carpet just minutes before the award show was set to begin.  E! News correspondent Guiliana Rancic had noted that Rihanna’s vehicle was parked for quite sometime before Rihanna actually stepped out, leading viewers to believe that she was getting some last minute makeup and hair touch-ups done.
I could not help but notice that Rihanna looked slightly anxious and disheveled when she took the carpet.  The Barbadian singer’s hair was unpolished, and her dress was unflattering to her body type.  Rihanna has always been known to take risks with fashion, but it was still shocking to see her in this poufy, pink empire-waist dress by Giambattista Valli.  The dress has since become the center of many Internet jokes—being compared to a cupcake, an umbrella, Nicki Minaj’s hair, a loofa and Barbie.  Luckily, Rihanna is one of the most beautiful women in the world.  She could be wearing a paper bag and her beauty would still shine through.Â
The 26-year-old singer had a chance at redemption later on in the evening when she took the stage with music legend Paul McCartney and rapper Kanye West.  The three music icons sang their pop collaboration “FourFiveSeconds,” in a casual, minimalistic performance, in which Rihanna wore an oversized blue suit by Maison Margiela.  She paired the suit with an 81.88-carrat diamond necklace by Chopard, slicked back hair and bronzed makeup.  This is by far my new favorite look for Rihanna.  With her exotic appearance, the toned down simplicity of this look gives an ode to her natural beauty.
While I am not the biggest fan of Rihanna’s first look of the evening, I do like the contrast and juxtaposition between these two outfits and the idea of femininity versus masculinity.
With Rihanna’s ever-changing fashion choices, this cool, laid-back style may be the image she sets herself with for the release of her upcoming album, which is being produced by West. To see more of Rihanna, be sure to watch the “FourFiveSeconds” music video.
