The Little Perks of Being Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Quinnipiac chapter.

We’ve all just gotten back from Thanksgiving break, wishing that we had more time at home.  Now, we face two more weeks of classes followed by a week of finals.  Although most of us wish we could skip right to Christmas break, we know that’s not possible.  Here’s a list of little perks from our week off that will be greater appreciated during the month-long break:

 1. Your parents do your laundry – Doing your laundry at school can always be a pain.  Whether you do it on campus, at a laundromat, or in your college house, it’s very time consuming.  You always need to make sure you have money on your Qcard or have enough quarters for the machine.  Once you get home, though, the bag is handed to your parents, and you don’t have to stress about overflowing laundry until spring semester.

2. Catch up with old friends – Being home reminds you of all the fun things you did in high school.  Break is a time to catch up with all of your high school friends, attend house parties, and visit places that used to be the “usual” spots.  If you are 21, home life will become a lot different. You can go to the bar whenever you want, partying with old pals in a new setting.  If you are that person trying to avoid some high school enemies, it’s going to be pretty hard.  You’ll most likely see them at a bar or party, the mall, or around town.

3.Preset radio stations work! (for people out of state) – If you’re anything like me, static is the most annoying sound right next to nails on a chalkboard.  When you’re in a different state, the preset radio stations in your car most likely won’t work.  As soon as you get to that certain spot while driving home, there is a sigh of relief as you click any preset station that comes out static-free.

4. Homemade food – The best thing about being home is the food. One, because you rarely have to cook it, and two, because everything you like is in stock in your very own refrigerator. In addition, your parents are very happy to cook for you because you’ve been away from them for so long.  Although this will probably last about two weeks, it’s nice to have a home cooked meal right beside your parents and siblings.

5. Hang out with pets – Who doesn’t love to hang out with their dog or cat when they get home?  They are usually more excited to see you than anyone else.  This is the perfect time to hangout with them, seeing as your not allowed to have pets on campus or in most apartments/houses.

6. Spend less money – At home, you’re more likely to spend less money. There are a few reasons as to why: You don’t have to buy food (unless going out to eat with friends), you’re working so you don’t have time to go out, or you’re giving your liver a break from partying as much as you do at school.  Being home is a time to regroup, focus on yourself, and spend time with your family (which usually results in no cost to you).

 7. Sleep – This is self-explanatory.  You get to sleep in your own bed for as long as you want. You don’t have roommates, and you don’t have to wake up for early classes.  You worked hard all semester, so you deserve to sleep in a little.  If you have a job, though, don’t sleep through your shift!

8.Work friends – A final perk of being home is being able to see all of your work friends.  No matter where you work, you have most likely developed friendships with your fellow employees.  When you go back to work during the break, it is a time to catch up and make some money.  You get to see the people you spend your summer with and share college stories.

Hopefully, these things relate to you in some way. With another break approaching, focus on the final weeks of fall semester and look forward to these perks above. We’ll be back in the comfort of our own homes and schoolwork-free before we know it!
