To Thine Own Self Be True: V-Day Don’ts

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Quinnipiac chapter.

Of all the days that are the hardest for the single girl, the WORST is Valentines Day. Seeing couples staring lovingly into each other’s eyes, holding hands while taking a walk and sitting alone while your roommates get swept off their feet to these seemingly romantic dates, lets face it… it REALLY sucks.

Therefore, I’ve come up with a few tips for all the single gals with no plans for the “big” day.

Things that you should absolutely NOT do on Valentine’s Day

  • Do NOT go on a first date on Valentine’s Day. Good News- you have a guy that’s interested in you!! How great for you! Bad News- Valentine’s day is a LOT of pressure for a first date. This day tends to make single girls desperate for attention and affection and this might lead you to do something that you might regret in the morning.

  • Do NOT drunk dial/text/facebook creep your exes- It might seem like a good idea at the time, especially when you might be inebriated. This is something that will not only upset you but also, nothing good will come out of it. Do you really want to make your ex think that you are so desperate that you can think of nothing better to do than stalk them?
  • Do NOT “drown your sorrows”- This one I think is self explanatory. There is one thing that is worse than a sad single girl on Valentine’s Day… a DRUNK sad single girl.
  • Do NOT be afraid to buy yourself that box of chocolates- Why let men be the only access to chocolate? Buy yourself the biggest bag of your favorite candy or flavor of chocolate and indulge yourself.
  • Do NOT be afraid to purchase flowers- There is no better feeling than when the door rings with a big bouquet of flowers on the other side! Having flowers in your room (no matter who they are from) will lighten your mood when you see them!
  • Do NOT hesitate to take yourself out for a spa treatment- Whether it be a good old-fashion mani pedi, a facial or a full blown two hour-long massage, every girl walks out of the spa feeling like a million dollars. There is nothing more attractive to men than a woman who has self confidence, so do something on V-day that makes you feel good about yourself!
  • Do NOT forget about your girlfriends- Yes, as college students we tend to refrain from shopping in hopes of sticking to our budgets, HOWEVER, Valentine’s Day is kind of a shopping emergency. Get your girlfriends together and get outfits that make you feel sexy! Next, get your single girlfriends together and take yourselves out. First, go out for appetizers and cocktails (if you’re of age, of course), then have a movie night in someone’s dorm. Choose movies that make your group of friends happy. Stay away from sappy love movies (ix-nay on The otebookNay!) if they are only going to upset you.

Ladies, when it comes down to it, Valentine’s Day is just another day in the year… just 24 hours. Treat yourself, love yourself and have a fun night with your girls.

Wishing you the faith in yourself, the hope for your future and maybe a little bit of love.
