Once upon a time, the staff of the Quinnipiac Chronicle was denied certain journalistic freedoms involving the administration of their own university. The executive board made a difficult decision and branched out to begin their own independent, on-line publication, The Quad News. Three years later, Quad News has established a reputation for timely reporting and consistency and this year’s Editor-in-Chief, senior Sara Bernabeo, has been along for the ride.
1. When did you realize you wanted to be a journalist?
I came into Quinnipiac undeclared, and after taking JRN 160 with Professor Paul Janensch my second semester of freshman year I realized I wanted to get into journalism.
2. What is your favorite story you’ve ever been a part of producing?
When I first started with The Quad News I wrote for the opinion section, and then I became the opinion section editor. While I have been a part of some great breaking news stories, I think my favorite stories will always be from the opinion section. My recent “Editor Speaks Out” about the growing trend of ‘slacktivism’ is a personal favorite, as is “Food for Thought: How Much are Your Eggs Worth,” which is about women donating their eggs for insane amounts of money.
3. What are your plans after graduation and ultimate career goals?
I have always had a passion for books; specifically children’s books. I would really like to get a job at a publishing house, and I would love to write for a magazine as well. That is my ideal future.
4. What are your hopes for Quad News in the future?
I would love for The Quad News to be on an equal playing field with The Chronicle one day in the future. It would be so nice to hear in five years that we are both the leading news sources on campus. However, I would also love to see us continue to be the small, but incredibly dedicated paper that we have become known as.
Good luck Sara!
