Now, we all love a good night of staying in, binging weird Netflix shows, and coming up with weird snack combos. But, every now and then, it’s a good idea to get out of the dorm and go do something somewhere else. Not only does this keep life interesting, but it also gives you the opportunity to meet new friends outside of just your usual circles. Here are just a couple of local events that are college kid (and college kid bank account!) friendly.
ODU’s Free Bad Movie NightÂ
This event is on the first Friday of every month at ODU’s Pretlow Planetarium. It starts at 6:30 pm with movie trivia, followed by a feature film at 7 pm. In March they will be showing The Incredible Petrified World (1959). Additionally, ODU offers free planetarium shows Mondays and Thursdays at 7 pm. For further info on those shows, check out the Pretlow Planetarium Facebook page.
NARO Theater
This theater shows second run movies and cult classics. Currently, they are playing many of the films nominated for Best Picture. They also have Flickit! Fridays, showings of cult classics every week. Upcoming features include an Alien 40th-anniversary showing, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, The Crow, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Tickets are usually with $10 with $8 matinees. You can find more information and showtimes at narocinema.com
Norfolk Catnip Cafe
This adorable cafe is working to socialize and place local foster cats with loving forever homes. You can make a reservation on their website catnipcafe.com. The usual price is $10 per person per hour, but you can get $7 per person per hour on Thursdays 3-7 pm and $8 per hour with a current student ID. The website also includes many group discounts as well as day pass options. Not to mention they have a little gift shop with all the cutest cat themed merch!
Norfolk St. Patrick’s Day Parade
March 16th from 10 am-12 pm on West Ocean View Ave. Bring your crazy St. Patty’s Day costumes and prepare for fun! Of course, this is St. Patty’s day, so be ready to deal with rowdy crowds and maybe a few less than sober people. But, if you feel you can handle yourself, as well as a really good time, then this could be a great event to check out!
Portsmouth Olde Towne Winter Farmers Market
Saturday 11am-2pm 215 High St. in Portsmouth. The winter market will be running every Saturday until March 30th. It’s a great place to get meat, produce, and goodies from local growers and find out what’s in season near you. This is also a great way to support your local economy and support family businesses, so you can have a fun outing, get your groceries, and do your part in helping the economy, all in one go!

These are just a few of the events that the Hampton Roads area has, so always keep a lookout! Join local Facebook pages or just keep an eye on the events that other locals are interested in going to. Local events are such an excellent way to get out and make friends, so consider checking out at least one or two of these!
