President Destler announced new ban on bottled water sales on-campus on August 31.
Over the next 6 months, bottled water will be phased out of all on-campus locations. The ban was put into action as part of the RIT sustainability plan, which aims to make a “greener” campus.
“In a time when we are increasingly mindful of the rising cost of education, it is difficult to justify spending university funds on bottled water,” said Destler in a letter to the RIT community. “Especially when our tap water is free and of very high quality.”
School departments, as well as student groups and organizations can no longer purchase single-serving bottled water with university funds. They can get bulk amounts of water for events, but not in bottled form.
RIT will also be adding new water dispensers, like the ones in the NTID buildings, to help encourage students to start using their own re-usable water bottle.
The RIT sustainability website states that “This policy has been developed to minimize the non-essential use of bottled water.”Â
