Recently, the Internet exploded with the token “Pick Me Girl” phrase in memes, Tik Toks, posts, etc. Many people recognize the Pick Me Girl through phrases like:
“I’m only friends with guys.”
“I’m not like other girls.”
“I ONLY like bands that are underground.”
You might know people like this. You might be the Pick Me Girl. I know I have my “Pick Me” moments. While we are pretty familiar with the qualities or characteristics of a Pick Me Girl, we cannot ignore our iconic (and super toxic) Pick Me Guy.
WHo is the ‘Pick Me guy’?
At some point in our lives, especially being students at RIT, we had some sort of experience with them. Here are some qualities that a Pick Me Guy may contain.
- Has main character energy (not in the empowering way)
- Wears “I’m Different” clothing items, but it is actually super trendy
- Makes you feel guilty for their personal life such as “I am sad and single” or “All my friends screw me over because I am too good” or “No one understands me.”
- Only talks about their life
- Only interested in how you will play a role in their life as a background character
- Sad Boi Hours happen daily
- “I don’t like cream or sugar in my coffee”
- Emphasizes how they never talk about their feelings but ONLY ever talk about their feelings
- Makes you feel guilty for not giving him any time
I can pretty much go on. Not to slander anyone, we all have our “Pick Me” moments, but there is doubt that these “Pick Me” people can take things a step too far and can cause a harmful relationship with other people in their lives.
I hope with our modern technology we can have a “Pick Me Be Gone” spray soon.
Create boundaries
All satire aside, it is important to never feel guilty about someone’s personal life. People who are like this, tend to make you feel like you need to fix their lives. It is not your fault they have “no friends” or that they struggle with their feelings. You can be there for them in a space that makes you feel comfortable. It is easy to get tangled up in someone’s issues and have them make you feel like that they are now your problems to fix, but here is your reminder that:
You Do Not Owe Anyone Anything.
