EXAM WEEK: How To Survive, Rochester Style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rochester chapter.

So, it’s that time again. Exams are stressful and scary, especially if it’s your first time taking them! HOWEVER…Rochester does have a ton of resources that you can take advantage of. From CETL to your T.A. to going to a professor’s office hours, there are so many ways to do well! Finding the best way to study for you is always hard but we promise you can do it!! However, when even studying can’t help you, there are always grumpy internet cats that want cheeseburgers and cute man buns to help you get through.

So, here are some study situations I’m sure you will find yourself in over these next few weeks and their perfect remedies.

1. The “I JUST NEED TO START” Stage
Set a schedule a week in advance and stick to it! Better yet, plan yourself a little reward, whether it is Netflix or hanging with some friends at the end of every study session. That way, you have something to look forward to. Taking breaks is a key part of studying because it gives your brain time to process the information.

2. The Cravings Stage
EAT HEALTHY! Packing healthy snacks for the library is much better than starving yourself and then spending $50 at Hillside. Don’t worry, we’ve all done it. But, when you get that serious need for a snack, don’t starve yourself, one bag of candy is totally okay!

3. The “How Many Times Have I Been to Starbucks?” Stage
When your hands start shaking and when the baristas know you by name and your regular order, it’s probably best to stop with the coffee. Drinking tea and water are essential for studying so you don’t get dehydrated. Another tip I learned from a friend is to put chia seeds in my coffee to give it extra protein! Who knew?!

4. The “IT’S 3am…WHAT AM I STILL DOING AWAKE?” Stage
There is a point when there are diminishing returns. If you are seeing double or imagining that your books are pizza then it is probably time for you to call it quits. Or I know some people who can just take a nap and study more. Or go for a walk or eat some pizza. You got this, girl.

5. The “I GOT THIS” Stage
My name is Madeline and I am freshman at the University of Rochester. I row on the crew team and am planning on a double major in neuroscience and women's studies on a pre-med track. I am also involved with the Eco-Reps on campus and I love to read and play the piano.
