Rochester Fall Activities

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rochester chapter.

It feels like just yesterday we returned from a summer break filled with tanning, hot weather, and beaches; that being said, it comes as a surprise that tomorrow marks the first day of OCTOBER! Where has September even gone? Before I get sentimental and start ruminating on the fact that I’m a month closer to graduating, I want to quickly switch gears. October is one of my favorite times of the year because of how truly amazing the trees look around these parts, and how many fun activities there are to participate in outdoors (before the weather really gets seriously dreadful). The best holiday (besides my birthday) also happens to be in October: Halloween! If you aren’t already thinking of a costume, you really need to get on that. Anyways, below I’ve outlined a few things you should definitely consider doing before the month comes to a close and it starts snowing (ie, next week).

  1. Apple Picking. There’s a great orchard about 20 minutes away from campus called Whittier Farms that has a wonderful assortment of different apples to pick from. They have everything from honey crisps, to red delicious, to golden delicious (depending on the time of year). A wagon escorts you from section to section, ensuring you get the full rugged experience. Don’t forget to grab some apple cider and honey at the shop before you leave!
  2. Haunted House. Rochester is host to one of the scariest haunted houses I think I’ve ever been in — the “House of Pain” (website: http://www.rochesterhouseofpain.com/). I went here freshman year and, unsurprisingly, I have yet to return. Zombies pop out at you from behind corners, someone is running around with a chainsaw, there are strobe lights threatening to give you a seizure; trust me, they have the whole 9 yards. If you honestly have a death wish out for yourself, go right ahead and see what it’s all about. Don’t say I didn’t warn you, though.
  3. Hay Rides. I personally have never done this before, but I was researching a bit on the web and there seems to be a great place in Brockport that has pumpkin picking, hayrides, bonfires, a snack bar, etc. all for a pretty good price. It’s called McCracken Farms and seems to be a great place for everything fall-related. Be sure to pick out a squash or two to decorate your room with, they’re great autumnal accessories.
