What better way to start off the Fall 2014 semester than with a good book? Even though the adjective, “good”, doesn’t exactly do the book much justice. Let’s go with enticing, devious, andabove all, extremely well written. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn is the story of husband and wife, Nick and Amy Dunne, and the chaos revealed after Amy goes missing the day of their fifth wedding anniversary. Unfortunately, due to the mysterious nature of the plot, not much else can be said about what unfolds during the investigation for Amy. However, much can be said for these two complex characters Flynn has created.

Written in both the viewpoint of Nick any Amy, the book is able to give two different perspectives of the events that transpired before and after the disappearance. Each character has their own manner and language that are not only unique, but complimentary to the other. Even though Nick and Amy are apart, the reader still feels the chemistry and understanding the two have for each other. Nick and Amy are what make the book for me. Yes, the plot is page turning. And yes, I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. But more than anything, I never wanted to stop reading what Nick or Amy said next.

Overall, I would recommend this book for:

·         Those that like mystery

·         The more mature audience-this is not a young adult novel

·         Those that like having more than one character’s viewpoint

·         Those that like love stories (this is definitely one with a twist)

For those interested in the story, but are short on leisurely reading time, never fear! The movie adaptation comes out Friday, October 3rd! Directed by David Pincher and starring Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris, and Tyler Perry, the movie definitely has the ability to satisfy. Even better, the screenplay was written by Gillian Flynn herself! However, I do have concerns that the movie will not capture Nick and Amy in all their glory. I guess I’ll just have to wait and see!
