The smoothie craze is everywhere. Social media is filled with green smoothies and wheatgrass shots; it seems like everyone is getting hip to the craze. Even Rowan just recently opened a Playa Bowls location, which is literally always packed. So I challenged myself to see what all the hype was about. If I challenged myself to drink two smoothies a day would I really see a difference? I was excited to see what my next couple of weeks had in store for me, but first I had to go to the grocery store.
When purchasing supplies at the grocery store, I went with items I saw the most in smoothie recipes. The products pictured above are just some of the produce I purchased; I also made sure that I included:
-
Almond Milk
-
Frozen Fruit (blueberries and pineapple)
-
Kale
-
Spinach
-
Plain Yogurt
-
Flax Seeds
-
Oatmeal
-
Chia Seeds
My Go-To Smoothie Recipe
-
One handful of kale
-
One handful of spinach
-
One whole banana
-
One whole green apple (diced)
-
One cup of frozen pineapple
-
A splash of coconut water
So what exactly did I learn after doing all of this?
Getting up early, changes your mood for the rest of the day
In order to prepare smoothies every morning, I had to get up earlier than usual for class. Typically for my 11:00 am class I usually roll out of bed at about 10:00 o’clock, which gives me time to shower and throw on some clothes before walking to class. In order to be able to not only make the smoothies, but also drink them, I had to wake up about 30-40 minutes before that, which was a huge change for me. Despite this change, after a few days it was actually easy for me to get up earlier and I felt more energized throughout the day. I was more attentive in class and actually didn’t mind the fifteen minute walk from my room to the lecture hall.
Eating a healthy breakfast forces you to make healthier decisions for the rest of the day
After drinking smoothies for my first two meals I was of course always excited to finally be able to eat solid food. When this time came I was very tempted to eat greasy fast food, or something unhealthy, however I did not want to ruin the good choices I made earlier so I continued this streak of healthy habits.
Kale tastes great
No, really it does! Why do people hate on it so much?
Smoothies really make you poop…Â a lot
It may have been my frequent usage of apples and flax seeds, but it seemed as if every time I drank a smoothie no less than thirty minutes later I had to use the bathroom (lmao).
Final ResultsÂ
I know you’re all wondering, so I’ll tell you. After this little experiment, I lost a total of *gasp* zero pounds! I know right: shocking. I thought the pounds would just shed right off, but I guess I was wrong. Despite this, I think I will continue making smoothies for breakfast everyday I think it is a great way to incorporate some vegetables in your breakfast and start your day on the right foot.
